Pizza is the one food that almost everyone agrees upon. People love pizza and it is very versatile. You can have it frozen, order it from a pizza restaurant, or make it from scratch. Everything and anything can top a pizza depending on what you like best. You can easily make these pizzas yourself by checking out the recipes online and making creations you can call your own.

Europe

Sweden

Pizza arrived in Sweden in the 1960s and was followed by kebabs about 20 years later. Then in the 1980s, a creation emerged the kebab pizza. The pizza base can be thin or moderately thick. It is topped with cheese, tomatoes, doner meat, and kebab sauce. The pizza caught on and became so popular that Dalarna University named kebab pizza as one of the country’s most popular dishes.

Scotland

Deep-fried pizza is a frozen pizza that is fried in oil until warm.

France

Flammkuchen comes from the Alsace region located on the border with Germany. This pizza is made with a thin, crunchy dough and topped with sour cream, sprinkled with cured ham and onions.

Pissaladiere comes from Nice, France. The pizza is round or rectangular. The toppings include olives, anchovies, and herbs placed on a thick layer of caramelized onions.

Poland

Zapiekanka is made with a baguette cut lengthwise. It is topped with butter, cheese, and white mushrooms and toasted golden brown before ketchup is added to taste.

Italy

Calzone is a popular folded pizza that originated in the 18th century in Naples. The pizza is stuffed with a variety of ingredients like pork, salami, ham, lardons, ricotta, mozzarella, parmesan, and pecorino.

Spain

Trampo pizza is prepared with Coca, a Majorcan flatbread. There are varieties like coca de trampo which is think flatbread topped with tomatoes, onions, pepper, and goat cheese. Other kinds can be both savory and sweet. They can include toppings like anchovies, pork sausages, and cured meat.

Middle East

Lahmacun is a popular pizza prepared with Middle Eastern flatbread. It is topped with lamb or beef paste that is spread across the surface. The topping is mixed with vegetables such as onions, chilies, eggplant, tomatoes, and parsley. Seasonings include paprika, cumin, and lemon.

Matzah pizza is prepared with unleavened flatbread as the base. It is topped with cheese, tomatoes, and ingredients like artichokes, mushrooms, and olives.

North America

Colorado

Colorado-style pizza is a heavily topped pizza. It includes various types of meats among them pepperoni, hamburger, bacon bits, Andouille sausage, salami, and chicken. The pizza base is a braided thick crust that has been sweetened with honey. The braided crust is meant to resemble the foothill mountains. The pizza is ordered by the pound depending on how many toppings.

Illinois

Chicago-style deep-dish pizza is a wonderful creation with a thick golden crust. This pizza becomes a savory pie layered with a variety of meats, cheese, and vegetables.

Michigan

Detroit-style pizza comes from Detroit, Michigan. It is a rectangular pizza with a thick and fluffy base. The pizza is topped with Wisconsin brick cheese and pepperoni. Other toppings can be added.

New York

New York-style pizza has become world-famous. It is cut in large slices that can be folded to eat on the go. The classic slice has a thin base that is topped with a tomato sauce prepared with salt, sugar, oregano, garlic, and pepper and is sprinkled with mozzarella cheese. The pizza can include ingredients like pepperoni and sausage among other toppings.

Ohio

Dayton-style pizza comes from Dayton, Ohio. It is a square pizza with a dough base that has been dusted with cornmeal or salt to give it that extra crunch. This pizza is topped with meat and cheese from edge to edge and cut into squares. The toppings include various meats and cheese.

Mexico

Tlayuda or Mexican pizza originates from Oaxaca in southern Mexico. It is prepared with a large, corn tortilla that is baked and dried to create a rigid base. Toppings include pork, chicken, refried beans, lettuce, salsa, cheese, sliced tomatoes, and avocado.

South America

Argentina

Fugazza pizza comes from Buenos Aires. It is topped with a lot of thinly sliced caramelized onions. This pizza does not include any tomatoes. A variation includes another layer of dough added with mozzarella in between. Other ingredients which can be added are artichokes and olives.
