Popular fish dishes in Europe

Kippers are a part of a traditional British breakfast dish. A whole herring is halved, gutted, seasoned with salt, and cold-smoked over woodchips. Kippers are now sold canned. They have a smoky flavor and are eaten on toast with butter for breakfast and can be used to make other foods.

France

Plateau de fruits de mer is a traditional French dish consisting of various seafood on a platter over crushed ice. The dish is prepared with a variety of shellfish like shrimps, mussels, lobsters, crabs, clams, and oysters which can be cooked or raw.

Sole Meuniere is a classic French seafood dish. It consists of sole filets lightly breaded in plain flour and pan-fried in butter. After the fish is ready lemon juice is added to the pan and cooked to combine the flavors. It can be accompanied by potatoes or rice,

Netherlands

Kibbeling is a popular Dutch street food. It consists of pieces of battered fish deep-fried in hot oil. It is served with dipping sauces like garlic sauce, remoulade, ravigote, or whiskey sauce. It is accompanied by French fries and a salad.

Hungary

Fis paprikas or hal paprikas is a traditional fish stew. It is cooked in a big cauldron over an open fire. The spicy fish stew is prepared with freshwater fish like catfish, starlet, pike, and carp. Ground red paprika gives the stew its color and flavor. The stew is served with homemade noodles.

Greece

Kalamarakia is a classic dish made with squid rings and tentacles. These are seasoned, dredged in flour, and fried to a crispy, golden brown. It is usually served as an appetizer or meze dish accompanied by lemon wedges and garnished with chopped parsley.

Bakaliaros is a Greek cod fish dish. The cod is flaked and made into fritters that are dredged in a thick batter and deep-fried. They're accompanied by a thick garlicky sauce.

Italy

Cacciucco is a popular Tuscan fish stew. It is a combination of five different types of seafood. Octopus, squid or cuttlefish are put into the stew first, and then tender-fleshed fish, mussels, and prawns are added toward the end of cooking.

Spain

Croquetas de bacalao is a dish that is prepared with salt cod and bechamel sauce. The salted cod is cooked and flaked shaped into croquettes, and coated in breadcrumbs and fried golden brown.

Gambas à la plancha is a traditional Spanish tapa dish. It consists of whole shrimp seasoned with salt and grilled in an iron skillet over high heat. Lemon or lime juice is spritzed on top and black pepper can be added.

Arroz marinero is a traditional seafood and rice dish. It is made with sauteed vegetables like onions, peppers, tomatoes, and garlic then simmered in stock or water with spices. Different seafood and shellfish is added to the dish.

Marmitako is part of the Basque country cuisine. This is a tuna stew prepared with potatoes, tomatoes, chili, and onions. The stew has many different spices added.

Portugal

Amêijoas à Bulhão Pato is a dish prepared with clams in a flavorful sauce with olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, white wine, and fresh cilantro. The clams are served as an appetizer with bread on the side.

Arroz de polvo is a dish prepared with cooked diced octopus and rice with a flavorable base of tomatoes, sauteed onions, garlic, and spices.

Filetes de polvo is a traditional Portuguese dish. It is prepared with fried octopus tentacles. The octopus is boiled until tender, and seasoned with lemon juice and pepper. The tentacles are dipped in eggs, and dredged in breadcrumbs and then fried in oil until golden brown.
