Maine

Lobster roll is the specialty in Maine. Cooked lobster meat with melted butter is put into long hot dog rolls. The sandwich also includes lettuce, lemon juice, salt and black pepper. Lobster rolls are usually accompanied by potato chips or French fries. There are variations but the one thing everyone agrees upon is that this is one of the most delicious sandwiches.

New York

New York City

Pastrami on rye is the signature sandwich in NYC. The traditional sandwich has thin slices of pastrami put on rye bread then topped with spice mustard and a dill pickle on the side. The pastrami is best when it is served hot.

The sandwich is the creation of a Lithuanian immigrant named Sussman Volk in 1888. She became the owner of one of the first delis in NYC. Today the best place to go for a hot pastrami on rye is Katz' Delicatessen.

Saratoga Springs New York

Club Sandwich consists of bacon, cooked chicken breast, tomatoes, and lettuce on two slices of toasted bread slathered with mayonnaise. It is a popular sandwich that is associated with hotels and resorts being a popular item on the menu.

The sandwich was supposedly created in 1894 at the Saratoga Clubhouse.

Philadelphia Pennsylvania

The hoagie has been declared to be the official sandwich of Philadephia in 1992. The sandwich consists of layers of different kinds of meat, onions, tomatoes, shredded lettuce, and provolone cheese on an Italian roll and sprinkled with oil and vinegar.

The authentic Philly hoagie also includes sprinklings of oregano, basil, salt, and pepper.

Philly Cheesesteak

Philly Cheesesteak is the icon sandwich of Philadelphia. It is a combination of thinly sliced pieces of steak and melted cheese on a long, hoagie roll.

It was created in the 1930s at what today is a Philadelphian institution known as Pat's King of Steaks.

Chicago Illinois

Italian beef is a popular sandwich in Chicago that consists of thinly sliced, seasoned layers of roast beef on an Italian-style roll. The meat is topped with pickled giardiniera relish or roasted green bell peppers. The sandwich is usually dipped in jus or soaked in flavorful gravy.

Mozzarella or cheddar cheese can be added. One of the origins of this sandwich might be that it was the creation of Al Ferreri who owned Al's Beef Restaurant at the start of WW II.

Atlanta Georgia

A chicken sandwich that consists of a boneless chicken filet is placed on bread with various toppings. The chicken can be shredded, deep-fried, roasted, or grilled and the sandwich can be served hot or cold. Some of the toppings can be tomatoes, dill pickles, and mayonnaise.

Supposedly the first chicken sandwich was created in 1946 when an Atlanta restaurant owner name Truett Cathy decided to make an alternative to the usual hamburger, He placed a boneless grilled chicken fillet on a bun and called it Chick-Fil-A.

New Orleans Louisiana

Muffuletta is a large sandwich that is a combination of olive salad, salami, ham, mortadella, and cheeses like mozzarella and provolone on a split Italian loaf.

The sandwich was brought to New Orleans by Italian immigrants. It is served cold and sold in quarters, halves, or full-size.

Po'Boy is a unique sandwich that originated in Louisiana in the early 20th century. It is made with a variety of meat or seafood like roast beef, ham and cheese, meatballs, oyster, crabs or shrimp place on French bread.

It is the creation of two brothers, Benny and Clovis Martin who opened a sandwich shop in New Orleans. The name of the sandwich refers to the moment when New Orleans streetcar conductors who were on strike entered the sandwich shop and someone shouted "Here comes another po boy!"

Florida

The Cuban sandwich is a grilled, pressed sandwich on Cuban bread and filled with ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard.

It was originally created by Cuban immigrants to Florida. There are many variations including such ingredients as lettuce, tomatoes, and mayonnaise.

Iowa

Another all American sandwich is the Sloppy Joe. It consists of ground beef, onions, seasonings and tomato sauce or ketchup on a hamburger bun.

Supposedly the Sloppy Joe comes from Sioux City, Iowa where a cook whose name was Joe created it in a cafe in 1930. He added tomato sauce to the "loose meat" sandwiches and soon they became popular. This sandwich has become a staple of school cafeterias all over the US.

California

The Patty melt is an American sandwich that comes from the state of California. The sandwich consists of Swiss cheese and an onion-topped hamburger between two slices of grilled rye bread. The sandwich was created in California in the late 1940s by Tiny Naylor who owned Biff's and Tiny Naylor restaurants.

Supposedly this sandwich was the inspiration for the famous tuna melt replacing the hamburger with tuna. A patty melt is usually accompanied by French fries, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes and Thousand Island dressing.

Another California sandwich is called the French dip. This sandwich consists of thinly sliced roast beef, black pepper, mustard, and horseradish on a long white French roll that has been dipped in the pan juices or gravy.

Swiss, American, Monterey Jack or blue cheese can be added. French dip is accompanied by coleslaw, potato and macaroni salad, hard-boiled eggs, sweet or sour pickles, black olives, and yellow chilli peppers.

Los Angeles, California

Avocado Toast is a sandwich that consists of mashed avocados, salt, pepper, citrus juice on toasted bread. Different variations include the addition of salmon, tomatoes, onions, eggs, garlic, cheese, olive oil, or red pepper flakes.

Avocado toast might have originated in Lost Angeles or perhaps Australia.

Made in the USA

This American sandwich is a group of breakfast sandwiches with different variations. Often crispy bacon, fried or scrambled eggs and cheese are placed on toasted bread. Other options include a choice of cheese cheddar, Swiss, or American. Bacon can be replaced by ham or sausages.

The meatball sandwich is an Italian-American invention where a long Italian-style bread roll is split in half and filled with fried meatballs, red sauce, and cheeses like mozzarella or provolone.

Variations on this sandwich include meatballs made of a combination of beef and pork and mixed with eggs, bread crumbs, garlic, basil, parsley and onions. It is usually best when accompanied by a cold glass of beer.

Peanut Butter and Jelly is probably the sandwich that to children counts as comfort food. It is simply known as PB&J and consists of two slices of bread where one slice is spread with peanut butter and the other with grape jelly.

During WW II both peanut butter and jelly were staples of military rations. The returning soldiers helped to popularize peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

One of the favorite and best-known sandwiches in the US is the tuna fish sandwich. Canned tuna is mixed with mayonnaise and spread on a slice of bread and topped by another slice. The bread can be as is or it can be toasted. Other ingredients included with the tuna are chopped celery, black olives, cucumbers, pickles, onions, or hard-boiled eggs.
