Hi everyone! I'm working on a quick, easy cooking guide series for all my Vocal friends and readers! I hope to upload a recipe once a week, so be sure to check-in.

I'll always give the recipe first and then jump into ways you can use it, variations of the recipe you may want to try, and why you'll want to add this dish to your diet! Think of this as a recipe blog with some helpful healthy tib-bits thrown in.

Thanks so much for reading and without further ado, here's the recipe for Vegan Bacon!

Recipe: Vegan Mushroom Bacon

Servings: 1-2

  • Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Take 2 portabella mushrooms and rinse them thoroughly in warm water
  • Slice the mushrooms into 1/2-inch pieces
  • Sprinkled a baking sheet with 2 tbsps of olive oil (you can use coconut oil, but I don't recommend it due to it's strong flavor)
  • Lay the mushrooms evenly on the oven tray, flipping them over so each side is coated in oil
  • Sprinkle the mushroom slices with salt and pepper
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes

Use an oven mitt to remove the tray from the oven. Let the mushrooms cool before removing them from the tray. The slices should have shrunk to almost half their original size and feel crispy without being burnt.

Let sit for 10 minutes, remove from the tray, and enjoy!

What Does Mushroom Bacon Taste Like?

Mushroom bacon tastes a lot like pork bacon, with a slightly less meaty taste. However, mushrooms taste surprisingly meaty despite being an intermediate relative of plants and animals (it's not quite animal and not quite plant!).

Ensure your mushroom strips get enough oil so they get really crispy. The crispier your mushroom bacon is, the more it will resemble traditional bacon!

Why Should You Use Mushroom Bacon?

Mushroom bacon is made with whole foods and healthy fats. It's much lower in sodium and fat than pork or turkey bacon. Mushrooms contain macro and micronutrients that help prevent degenerative diseases and cell damage.

Mushrooms contain B vitamins, Vitamin D, Selenium, Copper, phosphorus, and potassium. These delicious fungi offer a nutritional boost to any meal and contain many nutrients not found in other foods.

While different mushrooms offer different benefits, adding them to your food can increase energy, mental focus, and prevent age-related diseases.

I recommend using mushroom bacon rather than other vegan bacon options in the supermarket. Some brands of vegan bacon use "real foods" rather than lab-made meat, but nothing beats making your own! When you make your own food, you decide how much oil, salt, and other additive to add to your food.

How Can I Add Mushroom Bacon to My Diet?

You can use mushroom bacon in the same way you'd use any other kind of bacon. I enjoy adding it to my salad since it adds a little crisp, salty taste, much like pork bacon.

Although you can also add mushroom bacon to scrambled eggs, casseroles, and baked potatoes! It's quick, delicious, and very affordable!

Great idea and tips! 👏 I fry my sliced mushrooms with lots of butter within an inch of their life, which creates a similar effect. ☺️

I eat mushrooms a lot. Never eat bacon and have no wish to replicate the taste but I will certainly try this out sometime. Looks like a great way to make the most of mushroom. Thanks for sharing

I will definitely be trying this one!! Sounds so good. I liked your short and sweet format and all the extra goodies at the end. Great new series, my friend :)

  • I love foods for what they are and still find it odd that we create vegan stuff to look and taste like meat. I am a very picky omnivore but do love vegan food. Having said that your recipe sounds very tasty but I just see it as tasty mushrooms, and I will try this. Thank you

  • I'm a Vegetarian and mushroom bacon sounds sooooooo tasty! I can't wait to try it! Thank you so much for sharing this!

  • As a vegan I LOVE any good vegan bacons I can find... and I love mushrooms too. Might have to try this one. Thanks for the tips and the recipe!
