My Review of "BTS McDonald's Meal"

What's the big hype? Should you check it out?

BTS McDonald's Meal, has just come out in North America. This is probably one of the most ambitious McDonald's celebrity promotion I've ever seen. There have been some in the past but they never capitalized on the endorsement with an actual meal spread so far. It just shows how popular this group really is.

I admittingly don't know much about BTS, but I do know that they're an all male pop group from Korea. Not many artists are able to transition to English speaking countries other than Latin and Caribbean musicians. This is probably the first taken seriously. Psy doesn't really count because everybody in North America considered him a joke and he kind of made it because he was such a meme of a character.

McDonald's has had big celebrity endorsements before the biggest one in the past was Michael Jordan. I would remember him and Larry Bird used to do commercials for McDonalds. Those iconic wacky shot commercials are still in my mind today. Fortunately for them they had a sandwich named after them. There was a McJordan sandwich which was basically a quarter pounder with cheese, bacon and BBQ sauce. In fact that combination was shared with Larry Bird's sandwich the Big 33.

Unfortunately for a lot of us the McJordan and the Big 33 sandwiches were only available in certain McDonalds in select States of the US. It wasn't readily available to everyone.

Most recently there was a Travis Scott value meal. For those that don't know Travis Scott is a rap artist from Houston Texas. His meal consisted of a quarter pounder again. This time it included lettuce and bacon. There was no BBQ sauce on that one. The meal also came with fries and a Sprite. It's a very ho-hum combination but you can see that it's probably something that the artist himself preferred when he came into McDonalds. Again this was only available in limited restaurants and only in the US.

Right after Travis Scott got his value meal, J. Balvin had his value meal. He's a a Raggaeton singer from Columbia. His meal consisted of a Big Mac with no pickles, fries and an Oreo McFlurry. An interesting combination that sparks similar tones of the Travis Scott meal. It was probably something that the artist himself ordered whenever he was at a McDonald's. This meal again was only available in limited restaurants particularly in the US.

Finally we get to the BTS McDonald's meal. This one is very special because what they did was quite different from the rest. I don't think the advertisement isn't as big as when McDonald's did commercials with Michael Jordon however they did a lot to link to BTS. They've customized the bags and drink cups to match the BTS promotion.

The meal consists of 10 Chicken McNuggets along with 2 of their special BTS sauces, fries and a drink. This might not sound special however the sauces and packaging is what differentiates their meal from all the others. The two sauces are named Cajun and Sweet Chili.

The Cajun sauce is probably my favorite between the two. Why call it Cajun is another story because I would never have associated Cajun with Korea. This sauce when dipped with the Chicken McNuggets tastes somewhat similar to the original McDonald's BBQ sauce. The thing is that it has a mustard or horseradish tone to it. To add to the mix of things there's spicy kick to the sauce. I thought it was quite a nice change.

Second we have the Sweet Chili sauce. This sauce is pretty good as well. It tastes like chili oil sauce that you would find at an Asian grocery store but with some sort of sweet syrup. The syrup could be honey, or some sort of sweetening. That chili oil flavor is very recognizable for many Asians because we've had this sauce in our cuisine for a long time. There's no mistaking that flavor profile. Combined with the sauce it's quite interesting because it really does give it an Asian twist to the flavor.

Overall, this meal is worth checking out if you can. Technically you don't really have to purchase the specific BTS meal to get it because it shows up on the app when you're buying a regular 6 piece McNugget or anything technically. McNugget sauces are always free and I noticed that you can go in and add this to your meal for free. Try out the sauce you'll be surprised at the combinations you can make now.
