Hot Dogs That Eat Like a Meal

A world of delicious hot dogs

Europe

Having a hot dog in Denmark you're really in for a treat. Denmark-style hot dogs are well-known all over Scandinavia. The sausage used is called rod poise and it is a kind of red-dyed sausage that is usually served grilled. Toppings include both fried and fresh onions, remoulade, Danish mustard, and slices of cucumbers. You can find them everywhere in the country and can have them off a hot dog wagon on the run. They taste the best when they are hot.

In Sweden hot dogs are encompassed in a thin bread roll called "tunsbrod." The hot dog is wrapped up in tasty mashed potatoes accompanied by other toppings such as relish, mustard, and ketchup.

Norway presents a hot dog that is wrapped in a special, soft flatbread known as a lefse. The bread is fluffy since it is made from potatoes. The beef hot dog is topped with mustard, ketchup, raw onions, and cheese. If you prefer you can also request your hot dog with bacon and shrimp salad.

In the UK at fish and chip shops, you can also get a tasty hot dog called saveloy. This is made with a special pork sausage that is broiled and served in a bun with your favorite toppings. If you prefer you can ask for a saveloy that is deep-fried in batter to make a corn dog. Saveloy is served with chips or pease pudding.

In Germany you have your choice of sausages including bratwurst, knackwurst, leberwurst, nurnberger, blutwurst (blood sausage), bregenwurst and others. Most of the varieties of sausage are made of a combination of minced port and beef. The hot dog is served on a hard roll or a slice of bread and topped with sweet mustard and a special ketchup-curry sauce known as currywurst.

In Iceland hot dogs come in a natural casing and are topped with raw onions, fried onions, sweet brown mustard, remoulade, a special mayo sauce, ketchup, capers, and herbs. The idea for a real taste treat is to order a hot dog with everything on it.

The Czech Republic serves a hot dog that is put into a hollowed-out bread roll with the top cut off. Squeezed in with the hot dog are toppings like mustard, relish, and others.

Asia

Hot dogs in Thailand are called khanom Tokiao, meaning "Tokyo cake." They come wrapped in a special Thai-style crepe. The crepe is fried and then wrapped around the hot dog which is topped with sweet chilli sauce. Toppings can include jalapenos and sauerkraut to make for a sweet and sour delight along with the chilli sauce.

The Korean corndog is made by coating a sausage with batter, dipping it into french fries and deep-frying it. It is eaten skewered on a stick and most often sold on hot dog carts. Some variations include wrapped in bacon, mashed potatoes or seaweed and ketchup is used as a condiment.

South America

Hot dogs in Columbia are called perros calientes. Some of the toppings include a local sauce known as golf sauce. Other toppings are a combination of ketchup and mayonnaise, relish, and cheese. Other toppings of choice are pineapple sauce, potato chips, and other sweet and savory combinations.

The Argentinian hot dog is known as a panchuker and is a popular street food. There are even restaurants called panchukeras which only sell hot dogs. The sausage is dipped in waffle batter skewered and fried.

In Chile, you can enjoy completos on the street or in restaurants. The beef hot dogs are topped with tomato, cheese, chilli, sauerkraut, mayonnaise, avocado, and a special green sauce. There are different variations available such as A lo Pobre with toppings like fried onions, fried egg, and French fries.

Brazil presents cachorro quente which is a hot dog in a bread roll with ground beef sauce and melted cheese. Traditionally it is served with accompaniments like mashed potatoes, corn, grated carrots, fried, peas, or pico de gallo.

Shucos are popular in Guatemala and Latin America. These hot dogs can be topped with guacamole, tomato sauce, mustard, hot sauce, mayonnaise or a combination of any of them. Sausages include white sausage, salchicha sausage or chorizo.

Mexico

In Mexico hot dogs are named after the state of Sonora in Northern Mexico. The sausages are served in fluffy bread rolls that are not cut all the way through. The hot dog is placed in the hollowed-out roll, wrapped in smokey bacon and topped with ingredients like salsa, onions, rice, sour cream, beans, and mustard.

South Africa

South Africa serves up boerewors meaning "farmer sausage." The sausage is made from minced beef and spices like nutmeg, cloves, pepper, and coriander. Then rolled into a pinwheel that is cut-up in hot dog-sized portions. Each portion is placed into a toasted bun and topped with chutney, tomato relish, and mustard.

Australia

Down Under in Australia hot dogs are known as Dagwood dogs. These are made with a homemade cornmeal batter and deep-fried in peanut oil.
