Fired Up: My First Tailgate Grub Experience with Solo Stove
From childhood camping trips with my late mother and father to discovering Texas tailgate culture, an afternoon with Solo Stove reminded me why food, family, and outdoor traditions hold such a special place in my heart.

Some of my favorite childhood memories have nothing to do with expensive vacations or elaborate celebrations. They involve waking up outdoors, the smell of breakfast cooking over a campfire, and family gatherings where the food was just as important as the people around the table.
My late mother and my father gave me those memories. My dad is an avid RVer, and camping, backyard barbecues, and outdoor adventures were part of our family life. Those experiences taught me to appreciate the simple rituals that bring people together, from preparing a meal outdoors to sharing stories and enjoying each other's company.
Since losing my mother, those memories have become even more meaningful. They remind me that some of the most valuable things we inherit from our parents aren't material possessions, but the experiences, traditions, and moments of togetherness that stay with us long after childhood.
Years later, I still carry that love of outdoor living with me, even as my interests have expanded to luxury travel, beautiful hotels, and memorable dining experiences. That's why an invitation to experience my first Dallas Cowboys tailgate with Solo Stove felt especially fitting. It was an opportunity to reconnect with something familiar while discovering a new side of Texas culture.

The Cookout Is a Cultural Tradition
If you grew up attending Black family cookouts, you understand that they're rarely just about eating. They're social occasions where generations gather, family stories get retold, music sets the atmosphere, and someone inevitably debates who's responsible for the best barbecue.
Food has long been central to how our families celebrate milestones and maintain connections. Whether it's a family reunion, holiday gathering, or an ordinary Saturday afternoon, sharing a meal creates opportunities for conversation and traditions that can last for generations.
My childhood camping experiences carried many of those same elements. Some mornings began with breakfast prepared outdoors, while afternoons revolved around a grill and whatever adventures the day brought. Looking back, I realize those moments taught me about hospitality long before I understood it as an industry.
They also remind me that luxury and simplicity aren't opposites. I've enjoyed extraordinary experiences in beautiful destinations, but there's something equally satisfying about slowing down, eating outdoors, and spending time with people you care about.
A Texas Tailgate With a Familiar Feeling
On October 8, I attended my first Dallas Cowboys tailgate at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, ahead of the team's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I've been a Cowboys fan for years, but the tailgating tradition was something I hadn't experienced firsthand.
The event was hosted by Solo Stove, a company known for its outdoor fire pits and cooking equipment. Its pregame activation, called "Squash the Beef," played on the rivalry between football fans by bringing them together over food.
Smash burgers prepared on the brand's Steelfire griddle were part of the experience, along with a showcase of outdoor cooking gear, fire pits, and the Chiminea Topper. It was an opportunity to see how equipment typically associated with backyard entertaining could become part of a football gathering.
What interested me most wasn't the technology behind the products. It was the familiarity of the occasion. Although this was my first tailgate, the tradition reminded me of the backyard barbecues and camping trips I enjoyed with my parents.
The setting was different, but the idea was essentially the same: prepare something delicious, bring people together, and make memories.

Why Outdoor Living Still Appeals to Me
I've always appreciated brands that fit naturally into activities I already enjoy, which is part of my interest in Solo Stove. As someone who grew up camping and whose father still enjoys RV travel, I understand the appeal of equipment designed for spending time outdoors.
My interest in the brand is less about having the latest outdoor accessories and more about what they make possible. I think about weekend gatherings, family barbecues, and future camping adventures where preparing a meal becomes part of the entertainment.
There's also something comforting about keeping family traditions alive while finding new ways to enjoy them. The experiences my parents introduced me to as a child continue to influence how I spend my time, what I value, and even the brands I naturally connect with today.
Finding Connection Through New Traditions
After the tailgate, I attended the Cowboys game, which made the day especially memorable for this longtime fan. But the experience also gave me a different perspective on the culture surrounding professional sports.
Football may be the main attraction, yet tailgating creates its own community. People gather around food, celebrate their teams, and participate in rituals that often become family traditions. It reminded me of the cookouts I grew up attending, where much of the fun happened before anyone even sat down to eat.
As I continue discovering North Texas, I'm enjoying opportunities to participate in traditions that reveal more about the region's culture. My first tailgate introduced me to one of those experiences while reconnecting me with memories of my mother and father.
I went for football, food, and an afternoon with a brand I enjoy. I left with another reminder of why outdoor gatherings have always held a special place in my heart.
Sometimes, the best part of trying something new is discovering how much it reminds you of home.
