The Burger King Whopper is one of the most popular sandwiches in America. According to many customer surveys, the fast-food chain's burger is ranked as better tasting than McDonald's Big Mac, yet costs less money. The secret is out with this copycat recipe that tastes exactly like a burger from your favorite restaurant.

Quick Facts:

- Original recipe calls for ground beef chuck, but many substitutions can be made.

- To give it a more homemade taste, add the condiments and spread them right before eating.

- If you don't want to use imitation mayonnaise, you can substitute real mayonnaise instead.

Ingredients:

1 1/4 lb ground beef chuck

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

3 tablespoons ketchup, optional (helps flavor and moisten the meat)

3 tablespoons mayonnaise, optional (helps flavor and moisten the meat)

6 hamburger buns split in half

- With barbecue sauce: 1 teaspoon vinegar, 3 tablespoons ketchup, 2 teaspoons light brown sugar, 1 tablespoon water

2 teaspoons finely minced white onion (about 1/4 of a medium onion)

1. Place the ground beef in a large bowl and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Mix together with hands and form into a flat disc.

2. Use your hand to hollow out the center, forming a well in the middle of the beef patty. Set aside.

3. In a small bowl, mix together barbecue sauce (if using) or ketchup and brown sugar (if not). Set aside.

4. Heat up a skillet pan on medium heat. Add a teaspoon of olive oil and 1/4 of the white onion to the pan. Stir fry until soft and translucent, about 3 minutes. Remove from skillet and add to ground beef well.

5. Spread ketchup mixture or barbecue sauce over the entire top side of each burger patty, add optional mayonnaise (helps achieve a crispier crust and moisten the meat).

6. Add both burger patties to pan; ketchup or barbecue sauce side down. Fry for 4 minutes on each side. The burger is done when it reaches 160 degrees Fahrenheit or is no longer pink in the center.

7. While cooking buns, add the remaining 1/4 white onion to skillet and fry until soft, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat when done.

8. Place burger patty with ketchup or barbecue sauce side up onto bottom buns. Top with remaining 6 onion rings, then top bun.

9. Add desired condiments to taste (for example mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise, etc.)

10. Enjoy!
