What’s better than ice cream on a hot day? OK, maybe not *better*, but ice cream on a cool day is pretty darn good too. In fact, why should temperature have anything to do with it? Ice cream is delicious all year round!

It’s always the perfect temperature and tastes like you’re eating the clouds. It’s sweet and creamy, and smooth. It’s cold; it’s savory; it’s ice cream.

So let’s take a brief history of this delightful treat and explore some ways to best enjoy it, no matter what the thermometer says.

A (Brief) History of Ice Cream

It’s hard to say exactly when or where ice cream was invented, but we know it’s been around for centuries. The first recorded mention of the dessert was in a cookbook from 1671, and it’s believed that Marco Polo brought back recipes for a similar treat from China in the 13th century.

Whatever its origins, by the 18th century, ice cream had become a popular treat among America’s elite. In 1776, George Washington spent $200 on the dessert (equivalent to approximately $3,000 today), and Thomas Jefferson was known to enjoy an icy concoction made with milk, cream, egg yolks, and flavorings like vanilla bean or chocolate.

As industrialization increased in the 19th century, so did the production of ice cream. This led to new flavors and innovations like cone-shaped serving vessels and ice cream sundaes. And by the 20th century, almost every household had an icebox where they could store this delicious treat.

Today, ice cream is more popular than ever—over 90% of Americans say they enjoy eating it!

Tips for Enjoying Ice Cream on a Cool Day

Just because it’s chilly outside doesn’t mean you have to forego your favorite wintertime activities—or your love of ice cream!

Here are a few tips for how to best enjoy this frozen dessert when the mercury dips:

Warm up first! Before you head out for some cold-weather fun, take a few minutes to warm up inside. This will help prevent brain freeze and make sure you savor every bite.

Choose your flavors wisely. When temperatures plummet, opt for heartier flavors like chocolate chip cookie dough or mint chocolate chip. These will satisfy your sweet tooth without being overly heavy. Or go for something unexpected like lavender or Earl Grey tea—these unique options can be surprisingly refreshing.

If you’re looking for a lighter option, there are plenty of fruit-flavored ice creams to choose from. For example, Strawberry or raspberry sorbet will give you that cool and refreshing feeling without weighing you down. And no matter what type of ice cream or sorbet you’re in the mood for, it’s always better when enjoyed with friends.

Layer up. If you’re planning to eat your ice cream while outdoors, be sure to dress in layers so you can easily adjust if you start to feel too cold (or too hot). That way, you can focus on enjoying your treat without worrying about discomfort.

Accessorize appropriately. Gloves may not seem sexy, but they’ll come in handy when enjoying a scoop of your favorite flavor. And don’t forget about hats and scarves—they can help keep your head and neck warm as you indulge in this chilly treat.

As long as you’re enjoying it mindfully with others or alone in peaceful bliss when the mood strikes you – whether it is a hot day or cold – there’s always room for ice cream!

So go ahead and step out of your comfort zone and enjoy this beloved dessert no matter what season it is. Who knows? You might find that you love eating ice cream in the winter as much as you do in the summer!
