There are many jobs that keep families apart. Many businessmen and women travel across the country for their job. They may spend a few days or even weeks away from their spouse and family. Commercial truck drivers are also known for spending a lot of time away from their family in order to provide for them.

Spending that much time apart isn't always easy for a marriage. In fact, it is not for everyone. Many marriages fall apart when one or both spouse travels for work.

However, there is a way to keep your marriage alive while you are traveling. Here are some tips to help your relationship survive (and even grow).

Trust goes a long way. In order to survive the time apart, you have to have a good relationship filled with trust. You hear stories of truckers (and businessmen) cheating on their wives while they are away. You also hear stories about husbands walking in on their wives who didn't wait for them to come home.

If you don't have trust, you are going to be constantly worrying about what the other person is doing. You are going to be thinking and worrying about what he or she is doing while you are away. This is no way to live. It can add a lot of stress to an already stressful job. If you trust the person, you don't have to worry. He or she can go out with friends, and you don't have to wonder about what is going on.

Spend as much time together as you can. No relationship can survive if you can't spend any time together. In fact, some even consider relationships with truck drivers and traveling businessmen (and women) similar to long-distance ones.

Even if you are gone for a few weeks, it is important that you find time to spend with your spouse or significant other when you are home. Make sure that you go out on dates or at least eat dinner and relax together when you are home. By making this time a priority, you are showing your spouse that he or she is a priority to you.

When you are apart, keep in contact. It is easier now than ever for a couple to stay in contact even when they are apart. Many couples find time to text throughout the day so that they can keep in contact with each other.

Phone calls are also important. Even if you can only talk for a few minutes every day, it will help keep you close. You may also want to look into video chats, especially if you aren't able to go home regularly.

Give your spouse a break. It can be hard on a spouse when they are home taking care of everything, especially when children are involved. There are going to be days when they are overwhelmed, but you aren't home to help.

For this reason, you should help as much as you can when you are there. Let your spouse have a night out when you are home. Take care of the bedtime routine with the kids so that he or she can just relax (and not worry about anything)!

Don't be afraid to seek help. If you (or your spouse) are struggling, you might want to consult a professional counselor to help you through this difficult time. He or she will help you see whether or not you both are willing to work on the relationship, or if you should just give up. He or she may also have plenty of tips to help you through the periods when you are apart.

Though it can be hard to be in a marriage when you aren't around due to your work, if you trust each other and are committed to each other, you can definitely make it work. You both need to make time for each other when you are home and find ways to stay in contact when you are not. Also, you should never feel bad if you need to get some professional help. A counselor may be able to make the whole situation much easier on both of you.
