The Girl And The Fox
Cateline held her thick velvet skirts high and ran through the downpour. Horses hooves pounded in the dark behind her and dogs bayed above the sounds of the storm. She twisted to look behind her and lightning flashed, outlining the shadows of the soldiers on horseback less than two furlongs behind her. A rock rolled under her foot and she stumbled, but caught herself before she fell. Hot tears slid out of her eyes and joined the cold rain drops running down her pale cheeks. Her legs felt as if they were pushing through thick honey. She nearly dropped to the ground to accept her fate, but ran on, clinging to a thread of hope as fragile as a spiders web.

I suppose I could credit my good fortune that day to the weatherman, Lying Larry. He said to expect sunshine all morning. I don’t know why I decided to believe him this day. Maybe it was because of the months of isolation, or maybe it was just due to Gracie’s incessant whining to go outside. In any case, I snapped on Gracie’s leash and stepped outside into the crisp, cool air. Immediately I saw that trusting the weatherman was indeed a mistake but by then it was too late! Gracie was pulling with all her might and off we went to take a long awaited walk.
Tammy BaxterPublished 3 years ago in FamiliesBlank Pages
Once there had only been blank pages. She was born blank and not with the words as the others. The others had started out with years, centuries of knowledge. Some had the purpose of numbers while others of words, all had the purpose of dealings of men. They had laughed and sneered when they realized her existence was to record the mere words of young girls. Embarrassed she had slunk back into the dark shelf away from the flickering candlelight. There in the gloom she sat unnoticed with her small black cover and clean white pages until old kind hands pulled her from her solitary spot on the shelf.

Eliza was a creature of habit and as such, she would wake do her yoga and then proceed to go down to the nearby cafe for her bagel and coffee. That was the plan on this day but something happened the moment that she opened the front door to her house. She looked down seeing a plain yellow manila envelope with her name written in elegant script. She looked around her before bending down and grabbing the envelope. The weight of the envelope surprised her and she nearly dropped it. She carefully opened the envelope then peered inside. Her eyes widened and she quickly walked back into her house closing the door behind her, her bagel and coffee forgotten for now.

All the feelings I had that day when I last saw Vanessa flooded through me as I saw her standing there. I hadn’t wanted to go to that cheesy five-year reunion, but my best friend insisted I be his wingman. How glad I am that I did. It had been a wish of mine to see her just one more time. Then I could die a happy man.

Memorial Day weekend always holds a special place in my heart. The tiny town of Chagrin Falls, Ohio annually hosts the Blossom Time Festival, complete with hot air balloon competitions, a carnival and parade. From the age of 3 years old, my brother had always wanted to become a balloon pilot. By the age of 15, he accomplished that goal and now flies every year at that exact spot of conception.

I was born in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. That’s in eastern Canada for those of you who may not know. I lived in a small community nestled between Lunemburg and another, more progressive town called Bridgewater. They were both small towns. Lunenburg was smaller, but more well known because it was the birthplace of the famous schooner depicted on the Canadian dime: the Bluenose. If you were born there you were a bonafide “Bluenoser”

Jim had been a carer for over 10 years. He had worked with many clients that required different types of care. After a few years of experience, Jim decided that he wanted to do respite care. That is when you take those with care needs out and about. Usually to do shopping, or visit a community group or just set out on an adventure to see the countryside.

It was a week before my 19th birthday, and I was getting my first tattoo. There were layers to why I was nervous. 1. It was my first tattoo, I didn't know what to expect. Would I handle the pain okay? Would it heal properly? Would it look good?

The Night Owl 1/18/2021 for vocal.media Every evening after dinner, I have to go out and shut the barn up for the night. We don’t want things getting in or getting out. In the morning, I have to go out and open ‘em back up before sunrise. I have to feed and clean up poop on a daily basis. Oh, country living! Goats and chickens and a rascally, lovable mule. Basically, I am tied to the barn. We do have a Barn Owl, as do a lot of other people who have barns. She is usually coming or going at the same times as I do my morning and evening chores, but we work opposite shifts.
