A Granddaughter's Move

Owning her first home

By Denise E LindquistPublished 5 months ago 3 min read
Granddaughters new home! The day she moved in.

Her grandpa and I volunteered to help our granddaughter move into her new home. It will be her and our three great grandchildren living there. She found something just perfect for the four of them.

Her engagement ended shortly after their baby was born. She is now a single parent, in her new home. Some may say postpartum caused the breakup, others say she was at fault, and still others blame him. It doesn't matter to me. I just know it appears to be over and yet; she is moving on.

That is the good news. Her plans are in place to graduate from college. Some people blame the stress involved in going to school and raising three children for relationship troubles. Regardless she is moving on with their plans to own their own home.

On top of the move it was finals week, and she finished that successfully as well with two A's and a B. All of our grandchildren are beautiful, smart and talented! As a grandparent, I believe this about all my grandchildren, and I know that I am not the only one grandparent who believes this.

She told me that she has promised the girls that this day would come. Her oldest daughter had her 9th birthday on the move in day. They had a home in her first marriage and now they have been divorced for probably four years now. They co-parent well now, and her ex was there to help.

While packing her brother was there to haul boxes with grandpa to fill a U-haul truck. They did great. Granddaughter was packing, hauling and attending to phone calls that had to be made.

Me, I was on baby duty! Both days. I had a great time and so did baby. I only had one messy diaper to change and it was like riding a bicycle. It was just like I changed one yesterday. It has probably only been about six years. He didn't need a bath with the change, thankfully.

The last time a granddaughter was a tiny baby and I was with her for about an hour, she filled her pants, and I changed her and gave her a bath. When her new parents arrived home they were shocked that I changed her, gave her a bath all by myself. They said that they give baths together.

This little guy loves his mommy, and as long as she is out of sight he did just fine with me. He took his bottle and napped. He played well and even watched some elder Native American men talk about the culture.

One thing I am not familiar with is the new cartoons kids are watching so we watched that. And he sat still and didn't make a peep.

Granddaughter and great grandson.

While unloading the truck, there was lots of help. It started slow with the baby and I at the new house, and Grandpa and granddaughter going to pick up the truck and some final boxes.

Next thing I knew there was the insurance woman asking to take pictures of the outside of the house, then the realtor lady, two of her children, and two children from across the alley came to help unload the truck. As soon as granddaughter pulled up, they started in.

Then her mom came with three of her siblings, and another helper, and the truck was unloaded in no time at all. Her mother ordered pizza and chicken bites and wings for everyone. There was pop and water to drink. The delivery guy introduced himself as a neighbor.

Her birthday girl and sister came with their other parent along with their aunt, after they had just had Applebees and DQ for the birthday girl, so they didn't eat. There was left over pizza as two others had already eaten also.

Our Granddaughter received a card with well wishes from all of her apartment neighbors. She was so happy that everything was falling into place. Now, the unpacking is all hers!

We felt good that we could help. When it was time to go, hubby wasn't sure that there wasn't more that he should be doing.
