All of us have been victims of bullies at some point of time in our lives. And we need to accept the fact that someday, our kids are going to be subjected to bullying as well. A bully can turn something like going to the bus stop or recess into a nightmare, even impacting Kids’ mental health. And in extreme situations, it can involve violent threats or someone getting seriously hurt. Fortunately, timely intervention by parents, family, trusted friends and teachers can go a long way in helping kids deal with bullies.

What are the signs of bullying?

Unless your child opens up to you about bullying — or has visible bruises or injuries — it can be difficult to know if your child is being bullied. But there are some warning signs that parents might notice in kids:

Acting differently or seeming anxious

Not eating, not sleeping well, or not involving in things they usually enjoy

Seem moodier or more easily upset than usual

Avoiding certain situations (like taking the bus to school or not wanting to go to school)

Lend your child a patient ear

Being a good listener is an important factor of your role when your child is being bullied. One of the best questions you can ask your child is. What can I do to help?” As much as it hurts to listen, when your child tells you what’s going on at school, be open and patiently listen to what he or she has to say.

Be supportive

When your child confides in you about being bullied, listen calmly and offer comfort and support. Kids are often reluctant to tell adults about bullying because they feel embarrassed and ashamed that it's happening, or worry that their parents will be disappointed, upset, angry, or reactive.

Do not blame your child. Don’t put the responsibility for the bullying on your child or try to find a reason for it. There is no good reason or excuse for what’s happening.

Teach your child elementary anger management lessons

It's only natural for your child to get upset by the bully, but that's what bullies thrive on. It makes them feel more powerful. Practice not reacting by crying or looking red or upset. It takes a lot of practice, but it's a useful skill for keeping off of a bully's radar. Sometimes kids find it useful to practice "cool down" strategies such as counting to 10, taking deep breaths, or walking away.

Encourage your child to adopt the buddy system

Advice your child to use a different bathroom if a bully is nearby and not to be at places if nobody else is around. Tell them to make sure they have someone with them so that they’re not alone with the bully. Your child can buddy up with a friend on the bus, in the hallways, or at recess — wherever the bully is.

Help your child build confidence

Dealing with bullying can hurt a child's confidence. To help rebuild it, encourage your child to spend time with friends who have a positive influence. Participation in sports and other enjoyable activities builds strength and friendships. Even as you lend a listening ear about tough situations, encourage your child to also tell you about the good parts of their day. Listen attentively. Make sure your child knows you believe in him or her and that you'll do what you can to address any bullying.
