Learning Difficulties?

Here tips for better learning

You can spend time on your classes, nothing to do, you can not remember them. For lack of method, concentration or maybe because you do not understand them well. Is it lost? Far from there ! Here is a method based on 5 principles that could help you regain your footing.

Techniques to better memorize, it exists. But beware, "remember a lesson by heart is not enough," insists Helen Weber . This psycho-sociologist who, when she is not teaching engineering school students, explains to your teachers how to motivate you. That's to say if she knows it!

1. To understand well

"To learn well, you first need to understand what you are learning, but you also need to know what your teacher's goals are, which means that the lessons have meaning for you . After that, you can grab some "stuff" to memorize better, and faster.

So, if you do not see the value of a lesson or what to remember, go see your teacher and ask him the question. It is likely that he began his course by specifying the intentions. But if that is not the case or if you have not understood, do not hesitate to ask for clarification. Not only will this show that you are interested in the course but also that you are mature.

2. Find his place

To learn, you must also find your place in the establishment. This assumes that you are good in your body, that you have friends, good relationships with teachers but also that you know why you go to college in the morning . It can be simply to have good grades, to move to the next class or because you want to do specific studies. In the end, regardless of the motivation, small or large, what is needed is to have.

But, if you do not feel good in college, especially say it! To an adult of the establishment (CPE, assistant of education, teacher, nurse ...) or outside (parents, grandparents, doctor ...), in any case, to someone in who you trust. Charge that person then to help you. You must not remain isolated. It is not easy to confide his difficulties but it must be done, if not you will not be able to enter the apprenticeships. Going to college should not be suffering.

3. Believe in one's abilities

To learn, you must believe a minimum in yourself, in your abilities. You must have it. To convince yourself, it is enough for you to be attentive to what you are doing rather than focusing on what you are missing. The exercise is not as simple as it seems because in your copies it is most often the errors that are pointed.

When you learn a lesson or revise a math control, set goals that are modest at first and then more ambitious. It's like climbing a mountain. From below, the effort may seem insurmountable but if you reason in stages, then everything becomes possible. In progress, it's the same thing. If it's the spelling problem for example, at first, set yourself the goal of no longer deceiving yourself between "and" and "is" or between "a" and "to". Once you have settled this question and found that you are doing just fine, you will be able to move to a more difficult point. There is no learning without a minimum of self-confidence.

4. Memory cards

There are techniques to memorize as the mind map which helps to understand and therefore learn lessons. Again, memory cards ("flash card"). These are particularly well suited to memorize keywords, vocabulary, irregular verbs...

The principle is simple: you take a sheet that you cut into eight. On each small card you note information on the front and information associated with the back (this can be "tree" on the front and "tree" on the back / A math theorem on the front, its formula on the back). You take as many cards as you want. Once you are done, you reread each card. In a second step, you only read it on the front and try to remember the back. You repeat this operation twice, then you start again the next day and on a regular basis.

Advantage of this method: it is rather fun. And writing the keywords requires you to select the important information of the course. By writing them, you memorize them. Another advantage, playing several times allows you to reactivate your memory. However, no memorization without reactivation (repetitions) at regular frequency. If you learn at one time your lesson, you may remember it for control but not much beyond!

5. Answer 5 questions

Before you start learning your lesson, ask yourself five questions. If you manage to answer it, it is because you understand!

Example with the Pythagorean Theorem:

- What is this? : Definition.

- What is the point? : This helps to answer a problem.

- How? : Rules of use.

- With what? : Link with other parts of the program.

- Why? : Where does Pythagoras’s theorem come from?

- What is it that at one point we invented it?
