Cacao reflections

A course in cacao foundations

I have recently started a course on ceremonial cacao foundations through a company called Ora. This course teaches about cacao and it’s ancient and modern history; while also exploring how to use cacao in a way that is transformative to your life. You may be wondering how I came to this course; and I am more than happy to explain.

The husband and I were watching Iron Chef; and the secret ingredient was Cacao. I had this flashback to a time I had tried pure cacao in the form of a medicinal drink and decided right there I had to order more. Mind you this drink I had was over five years ago so I had to do some investigating on the internet for this company once again. (For anyone who doesn’t know my husband and I don’t buy chocolate anymore do to the fact most the cacao harvesting is done by children, there are few companies that actually pay attention to the sourcing of this plant and it’s important to us as well!) Luckily, I did find this company and found out they also care about sourcing and actually pay the farmers an above average to make sure children are not used in the harvesting!

As all my boxes were being checked, saw they offered the course and I knew u had to do it. Hence, here I am! Now I want to post my reflections from the course, I will not be posting the original questions since it is a paid for course. If you’re interested in the course I highly recommend! Here is the link! (It's not an affiliate link in any way. I think I have a discount code, but I haven’t searched. But if you’re interested, I'm happy to look!)

Without further ado, I present my Day 1 and Day 2 reflections.

Day 1 reflection

I wanted to do this course because I was watching iron chef and reminded of cacao. After reading that this cacao is harvested sustainably I was even more on board. I want to learn more about cacao and how it can be used in life and cooking. Honor the ingredients and really understand them. Plus my husband seemed interested and I’m excited to try it again. I had previous tried this and remember liking it. And now I have a chance to learn even more. At the end of 19 days I would love to have a better understanding and maybe even host my own cacao ceremonial services. I think that would be a fun way to have friends and family involved. And to share my knowledge.

Day 2 reflection

Inviting cacao into my life, knowing that is was basically a gift from the gods; shows me not only what love can represent but that love surrounds us. You have to know where to look, so when things might seem strange or low for you in that moment all you have to do is take a moment and remember that love really is everywhere. The properties of cacao that I’m hoping to invite into my life are abundance; in my own life such as my cooking journey and in my relationships with myself and others.

Post reflection add-ins

I just wanted Farienhiet 451 on HBO MAX. And it floored me. Amazing movie. My husband and I remember loving the book as well. And I finally realized why I have been so mentally exhausted by Vocal lately, unable to log in and even want to share or engage. This movie reminded me that we are coddling ourselves, unable to have dissent, and being uncomfortable with someone else opinion being different than our own, and honestly, I'm sad about that. I had two of my pieces removed, and even after emailing was not given a reason why. This type of censorship should enrage us as writers; but since it's not happening to you, maybe you don't care; and that's fine for now. But one day it will happen to you, and we should care.

Sorry you’ve been censored. That sucks. You are missed on vocal, and I hope you are able to recover them.

Good article. I never thought of cocao as a medicinal ingredient. Very interesting. Also, sorry your stories have been removed. That makes no sense. You should bring it up in the creator chat, as others have said.

Nice to see you and your wonderful, powerful and honest words on here. I totally understand where you are coming from and was sad that they've still not gotten back to you. I would keep trying and maybe like Dana says, bring it up or get someone to bring it up in the Vocal Creator Chat thing. Then, they have to answer. Either way, glad to read something new by you - your absence has been noted and you have been missed! Thank you for the interesting insights into cacao too. Might look into it more!

  • Pure cacao as a medicinal drink? If you don't kind, could you please elaborate more on that? Also, I'm so sorry about two of your pieces being removed. I always spam them with follow up emails until they reply me. Maybe you should try that too.

A very interesting story, Jazzy. I had no idea about the sourcing of cacao for chocolate, but I'm going to have to look into it. Thank you for sharing that. I actually drank brewed cacao as a replacement for coffee for a while, until the price tripled overnight. The company advertises theirs to be organically grown, but doesn't say anything about how it's harvested. I'll take a look at what Ora has to offer. In regard to the stories being removed, I care, a lot. Maybe it's something that should be addressed in their weekly chat?

Cacoa cousre sounds really interesting and fun. I really don't undertand why they would take posts down with no explanation and I sorry that its all made you feel so awful 🤍

That's so interesting. I've been off vocal for a couple days, also just exhausted really. I'd not thought of it in those terms, but I do value the ability to discuss dissent so highly. I'm sorry you've been censored.
