Audio Engineering

Figuring out where to start

Every feel like you love music and want to do something with it although you aren't good with creating lyrics or talented at playing all kinds of instruments? Here is something. Audio Engineering. You don't know to be musically talented but you should have a passion for music and an ear for creating a good mix.

Find a good school to learn from. In my case, I used an online school called Recording Connections. Completely legit. I looked at colleges and universities to find a degree program, but turns out that Audio Engineering is more of a trade. Recording Connections offered the best thing possible. You pay a tuition like any other school and the course and textbook are all online. All the quizzes are online and you submit all of the assignments online. The best part though, is that they partner you with a studio and a mentor in your area. So you do not have to go to a whole new state, find housing, and a job to pay for the essentials and everything while going to a standard studio set up or learn in a classroom.

The program was said to be 6 to 9 months. Turned out that I completed the course part of it in about 5 months. Very thorough and a lot of information to learn and retain. I was also partnered with the coolest mentor. In the beginning we were a bit ahead of the curve on. but then he went on vacation for a week and we kind of fell behind a week. In that sense, it is just a matter of keeping up with weekly reading and quizzes, even if you and your mentor are behind on the in studio lessons. It gets even more fun once you start getting into learning all about ProTools. That's where you get more hands on. You will get genres and you will be shown how to create a mix and implement each topic from the chapters. Then you will be assigned to create your own mixes and given audio files to work with.

If you are loving the course and the program, this will be so much fun for you. It's like you get 2 songs that you have done and can keep for a portfolio. Although I highly recommend creating some additional mixes, whether your own or things that you work on and your mentor says it is okay to keep for that purpose.

By time you finish the program, you will have learned and gained important skills and knowledge and if you have fallen in love with it, continue to pursue a job. There is nothing better than doing something you love and waiting for the money to follow you rather than chasing money for something that makes you miserable.

They say you should follow your dreams. I one hundred percent agree with that. Audio Engineering became my dream, now I get to make it a reality and there are all sorts of job possibilities and additional courses through Recording Connection that can be taken as well. You can take advanced courses, film or broadcasting courses, learn to do live sound, and so on. Just find what interests you the most. Find what you want to do. It's affordable and has great financing options compared to colleges and universities.

So this is where I leave you. I hope this has been helpful for someone wanting to get into audio engineering and hear my thoughts on the program I went through. I would be great to meet more new audio engineers in the near future.
