My Green Home
For my Wave Makers challenge, I chose to break down my home and our “green” habits. Allow me to begin by saying that we, my household and I, are not a 100% super green, eco-friendly home. We aren't, but the title isn't a lie either. More or less, we live by the ideology that if we don't need it, we don't use it and that if it's not safe enough to be recycled or broken down, then we don't need to be using it at all. With this in mind, we still have wasteful tendencies to an extent, but we try to make a difference in our choices to help out our beautiful planet.

I’ve always loved water. Born in Minnesota, I remember exploring Minnehaha Falls as a child, and I enjoyed visiting my grandparents in California because we would spend time in Monterey. I’ve always felt connected to the water, and everything in it.

I’m an optimist. I have high hopes for the future of Planet Earth. I believe that the techies of this day will prevail in giving us affordable electric vehicles with solid state batteries that will be capable of getting us from one side of the country to the other using an infrastructure tailored to that end. I’m already seeing the fruits of those who dream such things. There are more and more charging stations out there.

Green recuperation with social amicability and attachment can be an idealistic idea except if existing underlying disparities are tended to simultaneously.

When I say tree-hugger, what do you think? Is it some hipster with long, unwashed hair who loves the environment? It's probably used derisively, someone to be scoffed at as their heads are in the clouds. But this is an inaccurate idea of environmentalism.

I must have sensed that the tree's days were numbered, because I started noticing it in earnest about a year ago. I'd say hello each morning as I drove past, thank it for being there, being beautiful.

Painting near the shore had become a routine since moving to Maine. Though my spots were normally spur of the moment the hill I was perched upon today was treacherous but the view it offered was magical.

Cold salty waves crashed against the rocks. His green eyes were sensitive to the setting sun as he watched his favorite ship and sailor sail into the open waters as a storm brewed on the horizon. She knew better, his thoughts wandered as he watched, climbing the stairs of the lighthouse.

I was just a young preteen the year I realized that people were trashing the very planet we depend on for our existence. Like most kids, teachers tried to instill a sense of responsibility for our world in me during science classes. We learned about the dangers of fossil fuels, the depleting ozone layer, and the importance of cutting down the carbon footprint being left by one generation for another to have to suffer. At twelve, the thing that bothered me the most would be the danger to the oceans and sea life. Even today, I remember the moment I got the bigger picture, watching a movie that presented the facts about whales and whale hunting.

When you think of a steward, the image of a flight attendant probably comes to mind. But stewards can be more than the friendly people on a plane, they can be you and me, and our planet needs us to be its stewards more than ever.
