After episode three of Wentworth's eighth season focused mostly on the introduction of hacktivist/legacy character Judy Bryant, the fourth episode was truly an ensemble affair, diving back into the season's other major story lines.

As part of yet another cost-cutting measure devised by Ann Reynolds, the prison's Protection Unit is closed, resulting in all the protected prisoners, including Marie Winter, being located back into the general population.

And of course, the other characters finally found out that Joan Ferguson is alive.. but is she still the same Freak we all know and love to hate?

Here are the most important moments from 'Revenant'.

1. How did The Freak escape being buried alive?

Perhaps the biggest and most long awaited moment in 'Revenant' is the reveal of how Joan escaped being buried alive by Will at the end of season five.

As it turns out, Ferguson contacted crooked former prison guard Murphy before her escape. Murphy followed Will, and dug Ferguson out of the grave. Ferguson then murdered a homeless woman, Kath Maxwell, and buried her in her place. This means that Ferguson was in fact the mastermind behind Murphy's stalking of Vera in season six, but after Murphy's death at the hands of Derek Channing, decided to step back and regroup before continuing her plan.

2. Joan doesn't remember who she is.. or does she?

News of Joan's survival sends shock-waves through the prison, particularly those she tormented most, and particularly Will, Jake, and Vera, who would be on the hook for her attempted murder. Of the prisoners, Allie is most seriously affected. Ferguson murdered her lover, Bea Smith, and Allie spent the majority of season five seeking revenge for Bea's death. With Ferguson's survival, two years of believing she successfully avenged Bea are down the drain.

Everyone is left desperately hoping that Ferguson never wakes up from the coma she was left in after she was attacked at the end of episode 2. Unfortunately, and predictably, she does. However, Joan claims not to recognise Vera, Jake, or Will. Furthermore, she believes, or claims to believe, that she really is Kath Maxwell.

Whether this is genuine, or a clever ruse is unknown. However, the plot may be loosely inspired by a Prisoner storyline in which Bea Smith appeared to suffer amnesia after an accident during a prison transfer. In that case, the initial amnesia was genuine, but Bea continued to fake it for a while after recovering, when she learned the amnesia could result in her release.

3. Marie saves Ruby

Desperate to obtain hormones for Reb, and wrongly believing that Marie's offer from episode one is still on the table, Lou makes plans to corner and kill Ruby in the shower.

Upon learning of the attack from Reb, Marie rushes to save Ruby, snatching Lou's shiv. Unfortunately for Marie, Boomer, arriving moments later to see Ruby on the floor (having suffered an epileptic fit), and Marie with the shiv, misinterprets the situation. This leads Allie to bash Marie over the attack on Ruby later in the episode.

While things didn't end well for Marie, it seems her decision to let go of her hatred for Ruby may be genuine.

4. Judy Bryant is on her own

After the dramatic events of her first episode, Judy doesn't have a whole lot to do in 'Revenant', apart from react with confusion when the other inmates panic about the return of the Freak, having not been around during Ferguson's reign of terror. However, she does get a few important moments for her story arc early in the episode.

Now held on terrorism charges after the NSO planted incriminating files on her computer in 'Enemy Of The State', Judy is no longer allowed any contact with the outside world. However, Vera smells a rat in the situation and takes pity on Judy, allowing her to place a call to her Father in her office. Sadly, Judy's Father has received word of her new charges, and refuses to believe Judy's claim that she has been framed.

Now, without her Father's money to fall back on for legal support, Judy is truly on her own against the system.

5. Ann recruits Lou as her eyes and ears in the prison.

After Marie's bashing, Ann fears that her decision to shut down the Protection Unit will no longer look so good at her fast approaching meeting with the Prison board. To save face, she devises a cunning plan.

Calling her into a meeting, Ann requests that former Top Dog Lou take Marie and the other former Protection Unit women under her personal protection. She also asks that Lou spy on Judy Bryant. Lou is all set to refuse, until Ann makes a tempting offer. If Lou agrees to Ann's terms, Ann will allow Reb to legally continue his hormone treatment, and may even, in time, offer support to getting his surgery the green light.

We don't see Lou's final decision, but if we've learned anything about Wentworth's Lou Kelly this season, it's that she would do anything for Reb Keane.

Other small, but notable moments in the episode include Marie's former hold over Allie being officially overcome, and a fracture in the formerly solid relationship between Top Dog Allie and Governor Will, regarding the bugging of Allie's cell in episode 3.

We can't wait to see how this will all unfold in the coming weeks.
