SPOILERS for Wentworth ep 8x02, 'Ends And Means'.

Prison drama Wentworth continued its penultimate season this week with the episode 'Ends And Means', airing on the fourth of August. For the most part, the episode was quieter than the season premiere, 'Resurrection', mostly focusing on story and character building moments.

However, the episode ended with a surprising twist that could send the season in a different direction.

Here are the most important moments from Wentworth 8x02, 'Ends and Means'.

1. Boomer continues to antagonise Lou

Still wary of Lou after the events of the previous episode, Boomer shares with Allie her suspicions that the 'Pick-a-cup' game that Lou and Reb are running in the Prison Yard is part of a ploy to gain funds for a phone they can use to bring drugs into the prison. However, Lou claims that she is only raising money for Reb's re-assignment surgery, so Allie allows the game to continue.

Annoyed by Allie's lack of intervention, Boomer later exposes Lou and Reb's game as a scam, earning them the ire of the other inmates and probably costing them a great deal of money. While Lou did not retaliate in this episode, likely because her hand is still bandaged, but she will likely seek revenge at some point. It's also possible that Allie may have to punish Boomer, for defying her order to stay out of Lou's way.

2. Will alters Ruby's prison file

Upset by the knowledge that Ruby Mitchell will soon be up for parole, while she herself is facing life behind bars for her role in the siege, Marie Winter reveals information that she hopes will lead to Ruby being charged for the murder of her son, Danny Winter. The pivotal piece of evidence in the case is a photograph of an arrow tattoo on the back of the murderer's neck. Rita burned Ruby to remove the tattoo last season, but it is still noted under identifying marks in Ruby's prisoner profile.

New prison Governor Will Jackson believes Ruby's story that Danny's death was an accident. So, having promised Rita that he would protect her sister, Will alters Ruby's file, switching the tattoo for the scar that replaced it. Vera becomes a reluctant accomplice in the scheme out of respect for Rita, delivering the file to the investigating detectives. As a result, Ruby is cleared of all charges.

While this is definitely a case of doing the wrong thing for the right reasons, Will could be in serious trouble if his actions are revealed.

3. Ann Reynolds has tragedy in her past

After a night out drinking with her old friend and new prison employee Ann Reynolds, Vera shares her fears of being a bad Mother, and says she couldn't bear it if anything happened to Grace, her baby daughter. Ann is silent a moment, and Vera, suddenly horrified, apologises, though Ann quickly reassures her.

Exactly what Vera was sorry about is unrevealed, but the implication is that Ann may have lost a child in the past. We will likely learn more as the season unfolds.

4. Marie Winter's failed suicide.

When her plot to have Ruby charged fails, Marie is devastated. Deciding to end it all, she plans a trip to the protection unit's gym, and intentionally drops a a barbell onto her throat. Will reaches Marie just in time, reviving her with CPR.

While Will believes saving Marie and letting go of his hatred for her will fully break her former hold on him, in the past, he is often left regretting a life he's saved. We'll just have to hope this isn't another of those occasions.

5. The Freak is attacked

In 'Resurrection', Joan Ferguson, posing as 'Kath Maxwell', was briefly confronted by a man who mistook her for a friend of his, also named Kath Maxwell. The man appears again at a gas station in 'Ends And Means', inadvertently interrupting Ferguson before she can snatch baby Grace from Vera's car.

He claims to believe Joan has stolen his friend's identity. She claims he is mistaken, but he follows her as she returns to her makeshift home by the train tracks, beating her over the head with a crowbar and stealing what looks to be thousands of dollars. A passer by finds Joan unconscious and bleeding, quickly calling for help.

The scene is important for many reasons. One, the loss of her money obviously puts a dent in Ferguson's plan to flee overseas with baby Grace. Two, probably more importantly, her time skulking in the shadows is at an end.

Soon, all of Wentworth will know that The Freak is still alive.
