Reason First: Part III of the Charles Cohen Murder Story

Did Cohen commit murders for the thrill?

How many ways can one say that this is an extremely bizarre case? Charlie Cohen ends up in San Francisco, California. He, driving off of the fumes of desperation and depravity after bludgeoning and stabbing his parents to death in their Hockessin, Delaware home, decided to stop. He met a financial executive named Conrad Lutz. A gay man, Lutz wanted to engage in sex acts with Cohen. Cohen led him to believe that he wanted the same thing. His way of squashing any sexual feelings for Lutz consisted of stabbing him to death in the heart with a dagger that he had obtained at a homeless shelter.

Now, with three bodies attached to his name, Cohen must have had some psychological break from reality. In order to escape capture for months living on nothing but his cunning, Cohen had to use his feelings. His thoughts wrapped on the fact that he had just murdered his own parents and an acquaintance. His mind (whatever was left of it) must’ve reeled.

Cohen seemed rather casual for a murderer on the lam. It appeared as if he not only planned the slayings but had a goal to evade the clutches of law enforcement. But he moved carelessly. He tried to go to New Orleans, Louisiana to mix into the throng of people. He ran out on a cab fare and was flagged down. This act led to his eventual apprehension. But why?

Cohen, during his brief killing spree, lacked the ability to fully elude police officers. Had he thought of his evil deeds, he would’ve never committed them in the first place. Secondly, after murdering his parents and Mr. Lutz, he would have had a shred of morality to turn himself over to the authorities.

Upon realizing that he had been featured on the television program “America’s Most Wanted” in Sacramento, California, he felt a rush of silent fame. He couldn’t go around signing autographs or find the limelight for his horrific actions. In the back of his mind, did he hear the roar of the crowd that never existed or the screams of his victims? Back in San Francisco, Cohen had made it clear that he didn’t want any sexual favors from Lutz. All he sought after remained more blood on his hands, literally. He took a shower just after extinguishing Lutz. Blood covered the apartment bedroom. Police had tried to reach Lutz but Cohen remained quiet through their incessant pounding on the door.

The police did not show up again. What all of this means is that Cohen deliberately denied the lives of three people as the brute that he is. Denied the rights of these individuals based on whim and subjectivism. He felt that he could be a celebrity and a star by being infamous which is extremely cheap and easy. It is harder and smarter to be Steve Jobs or Bill Gates. He may have possessed traits that these two men shared yet he chose to do terrible things.

Cohen’s trip to New Orleans proved to be pivotal. After hearing about himself on the show “America’s Most Wanted” police say that he journeyed to Massachusetts and New York and then finally landed in New Orleans, Louisiana. He hungered for a piece of celebrity albeit based on viciousness. His motives and misdirection eventually led to him being caught by the taxi driver that he failed to pay. The authorities then took in Cohen. After a few weeks in jail and in a courtroom he caused jaws to drop with his confessions.

Cohen’s mind kept spitting out information that damned him. While he tried to focus on all of the life around him, only death and destruction played over again like a VCR on repeat. That old computer jargon GIGO (Garbage In Garbage Out) certainly applies to this case. Reality will wipe out anyone who attempts to wipe out reality. His brain kept sending messages that he rode high on the notoriety of being a fugitive. Finally, he broke down and could not hold in any longer. He had to let everyone in on his wickedness.
