Thanks to advancements in fields such as forensic science and DNA analysis, a great many murderers are brought to justice annually. However, this hasn't always been the case, and throughout history, many gruesome murder cases have remained unsolved due to insufficient evidence. lack of science or technology, or flawed investigative techniques. Cases such as these can cause a great deal of anxiety in the public, who imagine that they or their loved ones could be the victim of homocidal violence and never face justice.

Here are just a few of the most gruesome murder cases currently still open.

First is the case of Jean Van Cal, a nine-year-old girl who lived with her grandparents in Brussels in 1906. She often visited her mother accompanied by one of her grandparents. Unfortunately, on February 7th, she ventured out alone, as her grandfather was at work. Tragically, she never made it home; her dismembered body was discovered by a man named Yosef Isbos. The autopsy revealed that she had died from choking on her own vomit, and indeed, toxicology reports indicated that she had consumed a large amount of alcohol prior to her death. Sevreal arrests were made, including a Spanish man, an Algerian man, and a butcher, Jean Manning. Nonetheless, these men were all released and the case remains open to this day.

Following that case is that of Amber Hagerman, a nine-year-old girl who was abducted while riding her bicycle near her grandmother's house in Arlington, Texas, on January 13th, 1996. Witnesses described seeing Amber be snatched off her bike and be taken into a black pickup truck-a parent's worst nightmare. It is perhaps due to this emotional content that the case garnered a great deal of media attention, and 7000 people called into the media offering tips on what they had seen. Unfortunately, four days later, Amber's body was discovered in a creek four miles away from where she had originally been abducted, with wounds to the neck. This tragic case led to the creation the well-known Amber Alert system. Despite widespread media and policy attention, her abduction and murder remain unsolved as of November 2023.

Number three is the Boy in the Box case, a baffling murder mystery from February 23rd, 1957, when the body of a young boy was discovered in an otherwise quiet, tree-lined residential neighborhood in Philadelphia. The boy's body was found wrapped in a plaid blanket, resting in a cardboard box. He appeared to be severely abused and malnourished. His body showed signs of brusing and cuts. Despite over six decades of investigation, the boy's identity remained unknown until December 2022, when new DNA technologies finally revealed his name as Joseph Augustus Zarelli.

Following these tragic cases involving children, there are also the Torso Murders, a series of gruesome killings that occurred between 1934 and 1938 in Cleveland. There were twelve known victims, but according to estimates, there may have been more. Many of the victims were completely decapitated, or dismembered with severed limbs. To boot, the victims were street-involved or other marginalized people, making it difficult for authorities to identify them. . Despite intense scrutiny and numerous suspects, including Dr. Francis E. Sweeney, the true identity of the perpetrator remains elusive.

All of these case represent a haunting reminder of the many unsolved murder cases that continue to elude resolution despite the best efforts of law enforcement and new advances in technology. As society grapples with the unsettling nature of these unresolved crimes, it's essential to remember the victims and their families, whose quest for closure continues unabated.
