Jessica's Murder Case

Who killed Jessica

By Aafreen AliPublished 4 days ago 3 min read

On the evening of May 14, 2018, at 8:02 PM, Cleveland police received an emergency call from a distressed Mitesh Patel. He reported that he had returned home to find his wife, Jessica, unconscious on the living room floor with her hands, feet, and mouth bound with duct tape. Her nose was bleeding, and there were injury marks on her neck. Mitesh claimed he had been out for an hour to get food and pick up his laptop. By the time the police and medical team arrived, it was too late—Jessica had died.

The investigation revealed no signs of forced entry, suggesting the perpetrator was someone Jessica knew. No valuables were missing, indicating the sole intention was to kill Jessica. The police initially suspected someone close to the couple.

Jessica was born on September 16, 1983, in Leeds, England. She was the eldest of six siblings and had a vibrant personality with a keen interest in Bollywood movies. In 2002, she met Mitesh Patel at De Montfort University, where she studied pharmaceuticals. Their relationship blossomed, and they married in 2009. Jessica’s dream wedding was just like the romantic Bollywood movies she adored, but reality soon diverged from her dreams.

The marriage quickly soured. Mitesh became controlling and abusive, isolating Jessica from her family. He even resorted to physical violence. Jessica confided in her sisters about the abuse, but her pleas for help went largely unheard. Mitesh’s family, traditional and reserved, often blamed Jessica for any marital issues. To further isolate her, Mitesh moved them to Middlesbrough, where they started a pharmacy business.

Mitesh's family pressured Jessica to have a child, believing it would resolve their marital problems. Despite fertility issues, Jessica underwent multiple IVF attempts. The fourth attempt was successful on May 9, 2018, bringing joy to Jessica. However, just four days later, she was murdered.

Three days after the murder, the police discovered crucial evidence: a hidden hard drive containing CCTV footage. This footage showed no one entering or leaving the house after Mitesh had gone out, contradicting his story. Further investigation uncovered duct tape and syringes containing insulin at Mitesh's house. He had given Jessica an insulin overdose to immobilize her before strangling her. His search history revealed queries on "how to strangle."

A health tracker app on both Jessica's and Mitesh's phones provided vital evidence. It showed Jessica's heart rate stopping at the same time Mitesh's heart rate was highest, indicating his frantic activity of scattering items around the house to stage a robbery. Based on this evidence, Mitesh was arrested and declared guilty.

During his trial in November 2018, Mitesh confessed. On May 14, 2018, he attacked Jessica as soon as she entered the house, strangling and suffocating her with a plastic bag. He then bound her hands and feet and scattered her belongings to stage a robbery. Mitesh later casually picked up pizza and called 999 to report the incident, attempting to appear innocent.

The motive behind the murder emerged during the investigation. Mitesh was gay and had been in a relationship with a man named Amit Patel since 2011. He used Jessica as a cover to hide his sexuality from his traditional Indian family. Mitesh’s phone contained the Grindr app, revealing numerous conversations with men before and after his marriage. Amit, aware of Mitesh's plan, had been supportive of his actions.

Mitesh intended to start a new life with Amit in Australia. To do this, he needed to eliminate Jessica. He also planned to steal the embryos from their IVF treatment and collect £2 million from Jessica's life insurance policy. His greed and desire for a new life with Amit led him to meticulously plan and execute Jessica's murder.

Jessica's family was devastated. They had no idea that the man they had supported in the aftermath of Jessica's death was her murderer. The trial revealed the full extent of Mitesh's betrayal and the horrifying truth behind Jessica's tragic death.

In summary, Mitesh Patel, driven by greed and a desire to start a new life with his lover, brutally murdered his wife Jessica. His meticulous planning, including an insulin overdose and staged robbery, was ultimately unraveled by forensic evidence and his digital footprint. The case highlighted the devastating consequences of deception and the dark side of an ostensibly loving marriage.
