In the early hours of July 5, 1999, in international waters between Miami and San Juan de Puerto Rico, a 22-year-old boy named James Scarvone disappeared aboard the Carnival Cruise.

James had just finished college and had received $2,000 from his parents as a graduation gift. A money that he decided to use on a vacation aboard the Carnival Cruise.

The young man embarked in Miami with his best friend Jeff and 12 members of his family to take a 7-day trip through the Caribbean.

On the night of July 4, the fourteen had dinner, visited the casino and then ended up having a drink at the boat’s nightclub.

But at about 12.-30 a.m James told everyone that he was going to the service of gentlemen before returning to his cabin because he was not well. From here on, no one else saw him again.

When his friends returned to the cabins at about 3 in the morning to sleep, they saw that James was not there, but they took away thinking that the young man would have met someone and that he would return in the morning.

However, as at 10 they still didn’t know anything about him, his friends warned the crew to call James through the ship’s loudspeaker. But he never responded to this notice.

From here they began a search throughout the ship that included the registration of the cabins. Even so, none of this gave clues to his whereabouts.

On July 6, the FBI got involved in the case and they boarded the ship to investigate the disappearance of the young man. Initially they thought that Jeff, James’ best friend, was involved so he was interrogated for hours, but he was ruled out as a suspect for having a solid alibi.

That same night they called James’ parents to tell them that there was no evidence that their son had been the victim of a dirty game and that everything led them to think that he had fallen overboard.

A few weeks later, the young man’s mother asked for a detailed invoice for his credit card and was able to verify thanks to this that his son had not gone anywhere or paid anything after the disco. On the other hand, and according to the records of the lock, he never entered his cabin again.

In 2006, after broadcasting James’ case on television, a witness recognized him since she was also traveling on board that ship.

The woman told James’ family that on the morning of July 5, the phone in her cabin rang and on the other side of the line she heard a young man saying Help me, I can’t get out of here!” Followed by a scream, a fight and what she described as “furniture that moved around the room.” After that, the call was cut off.

The woman at the time was interrogated by the FBI but they still closed the investigation in August 2000.

He also said that a week after the disappearance he asked about James’ case, and the ship’s crew told him that he had broken up with his girlfriend before the cruise and that he had surely taken his life by jumping overboard. Something that the family denied.

After the trip, this woman contacted Carnival Cruise’s corporate offices in the hope of being able to contact James’ parents. The company told him that they had no record that no one had disappeared from the “Destiny” on July 5, 1999.

Today, no one knows what really happened to James that night.
