Canada's Youngest Serial Killer
Cody was born in 1990 and killed at least
Born in 1990, Cody Legebokoff is the youngest serial killer in Canadian history. His murder spree came to light by chance after police pulled him over for speeding. No one ever expected someone like Cody to hurt anyone. Family and friends describe him as laid back, fun-loving, and popular with his school classmates. He participated in sports and lived a normal childhood.
All those things changed after high school graduation. Cody found work as a mechanic and relocated to Prince George, British Columbia, with three women with whom he was acquainted.
A Shocking Discovery
Two years later during a traffic stop, police made a shocking discovery: the well-loved kid was a serial killer. By the age of just 20-years-old, Cody had claimed the lives of four women. His killing spree likely would have continued if police did not pull him over for speeding on November 27, 2010.
As two Canadian police officers approached the car, they noticed blood covering the driver’s face. When confronted, Cody told officers the blood was from animals; he had been hunting. Upon closer inspection of the car, officers noticed blood smeared inside the vehicle. Cody had blood stains on his legs.
A search of the truck revealed a blood-soaked wrench and a backpack containing the identification of a 15-year-old girl named Loren Donn Leslie. Police traced the tire tracks back along the rural road, locating the partially nude body of the young girl. She had been stabbed in the throat and bludgeoned in the face.
A Body Lying on the Side of the Road
Cody told police he found a body lying on the side of the road, stopping to rob the possessions of the deceased. He later confessed that he knew Lauren, having met her on the social media site “Nexopia.” He then told police that the two had consensual sex. He said that Loren went psycho and attacked herself. He said after she attacked herself, he struck her twice to “put her out of her misery.” He contended that he did not mean to kill her.
Loren’s autopsy revealed that she had been struck in the head at least four times. Text messages also provide that Lauren was not interested in pursuing a sexual relationship with Cody. In one text message, Loren says, “we’re just hanging out, right? Nothing sexual.”
DNA Links Man to Other Murders
DNA linked him to three other unsolved murders as well. The body of 35-year-old Jill Stacey Suckhenko was found in October 2009. She died of blunt force trauma to the head. The body of 35-year-old Cynthia Frances Maas was located in September 2010, an autopsy revealing her final moments of life was brutal, with evidence suggesting her face had been stomped. The body of 25-year-old Natasha Montgomery was never found, though police found her DNA on several items inside Cody’s apartment -including an ax.
The three women worked as sex workers. The nature of their work likely led to their murders. Cody revealed in court that he had a serious cocaine addiction and the women helped him find cocaine.
Conviction & Sentencing
In September 2014, Cody pleaded not guilty to all charges, telling the court that he was “involved” with the murders but did not kill the women. He initially offered to accept a plea deal convicting him of lesser charges which the court declined.
Cody was convicted of four counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole in 25 years.
