Five individuals, four of whom were students, were shot on the campus of Morgan State University in Baltimore during the annual homecoming events that took place on Tuesday night. This incident triggered a shelter-in-place order lasting several hours and resulted in the cancellation of classes on Wednesday. At present, law enforcement has not been able to apprehend the assailant responsible for the shooting.

During a press conference held in the early hours of Wednesday, Richard Worley, Baltimore's Police Commissioner, disclosed that one woman and four men, all between the ages of 18 and 22, were receiving medical treatment for non-life-threatening gunshot injuries. Following this unfortunate incident, the university's president, David Kwabena Wilson, decided to cancel classes for the next day.

The shooting occurred shortly after the conclusion of the customary homecoming ceremony, which involved the crowning of Mister and Miss Morgan State, leading up to the highly anticipated football game scheduled for Saturday. Homecoming holds significant importance within historically Black colleges and universities, serving as a cherished tradition that unites generations of students and alumni.

At approximately 9:25 p.m., police officers on patrol became aware of gunshots being fired while students were transitioning from the crowded auditorium in Murphy Fine Arts Center to a coronation ball held at the University Student Center. As a precautionary measure, the university issued advisories urging individuals to avoid the vicinity surrounding the arts center and Thurgood Marshall Hall, an adjacent dormitory building. Law enforcement specifically alerted the public to the presence of an active shooter in the area.

Minutes later, the officers discovered the victims and observed shattered windows, leading them to suspect an active shooter, according to Mr. Worley. Subsequently, the Baltimore Police Department promptly issued a shelter-in-place order, which was lifted early Wednesday.

As of now, the police have not managed to locate a suspect or make any arrests, Mr. Worley confirmed. However, he mentioned that the decision to lift the shelter-in-place order was made once it was determined that there was no longer an ongoing active shooter situation.

"We refrained from reopening the campus until our SWAT team had thoroughly searched the building where the suspect may have fled or where we believed the shot originated," he stated. Additionally, the police believed the shooting occurred outdoors.

Tuesday night marked the third consecutive year in which a shooting disrupted Morgan State's homecoming week. In October of last year, an individual was shot at an "unsanctioned" homecoming after-party. Similarly, two years prior, a student was shot at the conclusion of an otherwise peaceful homecoming week.

Federal agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), expressed their involvement in supporting the response to the shooting incident. Governor Wes Moore of Maryland confirmed that his office was well-informed of the ongoing situation.

Bill Ferguson, a Democratic state legislator representing Baltimore, took to social media and stated, "The repetition of these horrific events is about one thing: easy access to guns." He acknowledged the unimaginable fear that parents are experiencing as they worry about the safety of their children at Morgan tonight.

Morgan State University holds the distinction of being one of Maryland's oldest historically Black colleges, boasting an enrollment of approximately 9,000 students.

This incident at Morgan State on Tuesday night serves as the most recent illustration of an armed individual posing a threat on a college campus. In a separate occurrence in August, a graduate student at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill faced charges for the tragic killing of a faculty member.

Later that month, a Caucasian assailant entered the premises of Edward Waters University, located in Jacksonville, Florida, which has a rich history as a historically Black college. The individual proceeded to don a bulletproof vest before swiftly departing the scene. Tragically, the assailant then took the lives of three Black individuals in a neighboring Dollar General store.

Fast forward to the month of February, where another incident occurred on the grounds of Michigan State University. In this case, a perpetrator targeted the campus, resulting in the deaths of three students and leaving five others with injuries.
