Nobody cares, work harder

expectation of empathy in everything we do

The first time I came across this quote was on the channel of Dax, who is a very talented artist to say the least. This statement encapsulates a lot, and there is just so much to unpack from a simple statement like this one. It might seem quite easy to read and understand, but there is just so much hidden behind these few words, and it really takes for you to be at a specific point in life and for you to have gone through some experiences in order to understand the full extent of such a simple statement.

The expectation of empathy

One thing we don't realize but which is very common in literally everybody is the expectation of empathy in everything we do. In every single work we do we expect empathy, because of the fear of judgment we are always in the quest of empathy to be shown to us. Even when we are certain we have done things right, there is always this lingering fear at the back of our minds, and this leads us to expect people to show us empathy for our flaws and our mistakes.

There is no telling beforehand what our work is going to produce as a result, especially when this work is subject to the opinion and judgement of others. A good example of this is when you look at artists who might spend literally months working on a project just for it to be rejected by a crowd of people who just don't appreciate it, and so this need for empathy often makes us forget to realize that the solution is for us to work even harder or maybe think differently. In other words because you are expecting people to show you some degree of pity you forget to realize that what you need in order to succeed is to work harder.

Nobody cares about your excuses

Even when we give it our best there are still some lingering doubts which lead us to make all sorts of excuses, we are often full of excuses why things didn't happen the way we wanted, how things could have been better or what we could have done differently if the circumstances were different. And so we are going to give all sorts of excuses to justify what we have done and the results we received.

Its not fair but thats just the world we live in, I am not happy about it and it really is sad to say that people just don’t care about your excuses. At the end of the day what matters the most to people is how productive you are and the results you get. I personally think its because there is so much competition out there and we are all fighting for the same resources so we can’t afford to care that much about things which hold us back.

Nobody cares about your excuses, I think its more accurate to say, most people can’t afford to care about your excuses.

It is a popular mentality

Another aspect which makes this statement all the more true is the fact that making excuses has become something popular. Failing is much more common that succeeding, I think if you have to give a ratio of failure to success rate it would be 9:1 and the reasons being very diverse. The excuses are justified, the excuses we give really do make sense and do explain what happened but the fact of the matter is that people just don’t care.

There is a popular mindset of always complaining, always making excuses, always trying to explain what happened and what didn’t happen. That might be of use to others but really, for everybody else that's just noise we really don’t care for.

Just a little harder

Work harder! thats the second part of that statement and it invites you to keep working, to keep striving and to keep trying. Instead of focusing on all the negative side of things, you better focus on working harder.

Conclusion

I don’t appreciate this statement completely because I feel its very cold and void of all empathy. Failure isn’t always a consequence of not working hard enough, and saying “nobody cares” is simply not true. Some people do care, some people even without no apparent reason will care about you, without mentioning that people can see your efforts and even in failure can still relate to you and your struggles. Overall I think this statement is a sinister representation of a portion of society, and we should use it as an inspiration to work harder instead of complaining all the time.

I think your final statement sums it up perfectly. This was a very cool perspective to read and I like your nuanced take on the motto. It can be disheartening to think that nobody cares, but it's also be empowering to feel like the solution can be as simple as working harder or trying new strategies. As you mentioned I think the truth lies somewhere in between! This was a great read. Thank you for writing and sharing this, real Jema!
