But in rare cases, in the long term, “constipation” can cause many complications. Especially if it is of the chronic type, that is, if the constipation lasts two weeks or more, with going to the bathroom intermittently, and with very small amounts of stool.

Approximately, about 20 percent of children in the "toddler" age group suffer from constipation.

Causes of constipation,

according to the Cleveland Clinic. Constipation in children is defined as if it is less than twice a week with the passage of hard, painful stools from the rectum ending in the anus. Approximately the same definition is used according to the “American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)”, which says that the child suffers from the passage of large, hard and dry stools accompanied by painful bowel movements (mostly the child feels abdominal cramps due to constipation) and there may be contamination on clothes The inner child between the times he enters the bathroom and also there may be blood on the outside of the stool.

The main reason for the occurrence of constipation depends mainly on the diet. The more the child's food is very rich in processed foods, dairy products and sweets, the greater the possibility of constipation, as well as eating foods that do not contain large amounts of fiber such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

Any change in diet also causes a change in bowel movements. in younger children; Just changing the quality of the milk could be the reason. Whether it is from breast milk to artificial milk, or the beginning of eating natural dairy such as cow's milk, which can also cause allergies in the child.

In many times, the cause of constipation is the children's refusal to go to the bathroom after the exercises that the mother resorts to to urge the child to control (toilet training), especially if the child is young. Sometimes refusing to go to the bathroom is a result of the child's preoccupation with a specific game or unwillingness to go to public bathrooms, as happens frequently in schools; There is what is called “habitual constipation.” Because the child suffers from shyness or fear, and therefore he cannot ask permission during the lessons, which makes him control himself, and with the passage of time the nature of the bowel movement changes. In addition, the child does not get enough fluids, especially water, while spending long times outside the home.

There are some reasons not directly related to the digestive system, such as lack of physical activity and sedentary life, which can play a role in the occurrence of constipation. Because sports and exercise help the movement of food and facilitate the process of digestion, and also some medications or nutritional supplements lead to constipation, such as supplements that contain iron, especially high doses of them, as well as narcotic pain relievers (narcotics), and in rare cases it can cause a birth defect in the stomach. Formation of the intestines, anus, or rectum is a kind of chronic constipation, as well as cerebral palsy and some other nervous system disorders.

Remedial procedures

There are some symptoms that can accompany constipation, such as stomach pain; Because the child suffers from bloating, nausea and loss of appetite can also occur, and the child suffers from bad mood. While in the bathroom, crying, screaming, sweating, and redness of the face occur, and with time the child avoids using the bathroom so as not to suffer pain, which leads to exacerbation of constipation, as the stool begins to accumulate in the lower part of the intestine and becomes larger in size, and passing in the rectum becomes more difficult and painful.

Doctors emphasize the need to increase the amount of fluids in the child's diet, especially water (provided that it is not derived from dairy products, such as large quantities of natural milk that exceed two cups of milk per day). Also, the necessity of having fiber in the diet every day, and foods rich in fiber include fruits and fruit juices that contain “sorbitol” (prunes, mangoes, pears) and vegetables (broccoli and peas), as well as legumes such as beans, and bread that contains whole grains, and it is preferable to avoid foods that contain Low-fiber dense fats.

There are some procedures that help treat constipation, such as encouraging the child to engage in physical activity for a period ranging between 30 and 60 minutes a day, whatever the type of this activity. Whether it's a regular game or just random movement. It is also preferable to encourage the child to use the bathroom at specific regular times during the day, especially after meals, and advise him to go to the bathroom when he feels the need to do so anywhere. For younger children, it is preferable for the child to sit for at least 10 minutes at a time, and a small chair can be placed under his feet. This method helps to move the intestines and push the stool down, thus getting rid of the child from pain.

In the end, if these tips do not succeed in treating the child, then medications that help in bowel movement can be resorted to, but after consulting a doctor; Because these medicines should be used carefully with children, it is preferable to use topical suppositories that contain glycerine.
