An Appreciation for companionship
Thank you for stopping by to celebrate what friendship means. Written for Heather Hubler's Friends Among Us Challenge. Details below.
The first time I went to a friend's house as a kid, I was able to see how others lived. Their routines, their parent's restrictions, the games they liked to play, the food they ate. It opened me up to a new world outside of what I thought was normal. I realized that, although we were different in many ways, we were alike in even more. We clicked. Not because we just happened to like each other...
You may think that when you're 6, you're not aware of the many differences in personality, we are to a degree. Whether we know the words or not to explain ourselves, instinct is there to help us understand what we like. For instance, I wouldn't choose to be friends with a bully because I don't feel the same about hurting other's feelings. There's nothing fun about that at all. I wouldn't necessarily choose to be friends with a tattletale either, someone always running to tell their parents the simplest of things. Can’t keep secrets that way, lol. Even if the aforementioned were the only neighbors for miles, it doesn't mean I would like them for the convenience of having a friend.
After becoming a young adult, on occasion, I would disappear inside my head to overthink things on a more psychological level. I came to the general consensus about my good friends. Our personalities are similar, our system of logic and evaluation synchronize. We enjoy each other's company. More importantly, we like the same things. It's the perfect combination to begin making memories with someone outside of family.
Fast forward to today and ask me what my best friendships mean to me now, and I will say this... 'Check out this poem I wrote to express it-'

AMIGOS
...And one day you were simply there,
an open invitation we didn't know
would bloom into an unbreakable bond.
Sprinkled with care and sealed with
reliable trust,
we raced to the planets and never looked back.
You are the mirror image,
a different aspect of
myself.
You showed me who I was and
can be.
Egging me on or pushing me
beyond limits
to places I didn't know I could see.
You understand my
awkwardness more than
I do.
You are Someone to joke with,
bounce ideas around until
we reach that goal post
set so far into the sky.
Words can only begin
to describe the awesomeness
of what it means to be
friends with you.
I hit the proverbial jackpot of
brotherhood...
Yes,
we move on and priorities change
but I have a natural feeling
that
'Till death do us part'
equally applies to
friendships... our friendship
Much love, compadre...

I am grateful for all the friends I've had in my life. Wouldn't change a thing. I am also grateful for my online friends, particularly, Vocal. Just like any friendship outside a keyboard, we've laughed, cried, rejoiced, debated and in some cases, bonded with each other.
Because of the time spent reading so much of your material, you have helped fine-tuned my writing skills with your amazing work, seriously. From the educational to the enthralling, to the inspirational the heartbreak and consoling, I have paid attention, recognized errors in my own scribbles, learned more about how other people express themselves through the power of words and can truly say that this here, Vocal experiment, works in ways I couldn't have predicted.
Thank you...
