If walls could talk, you would not listen unless you had to. How can I be so sure? One has not risen from the centre of the earth in a tectonic and seismic exaltation, stood stoic for three hundred million years through ice ages, through meteoric obliteration, and born witness to unprecedented evolution to be in any doubt of a few pounds of flesh such as you.

The Last Word. Runner-Up in If Walls Could Talk.
If walls could talk, I would tell you that I’m sorry. *** I can tell it’s your first time inside. Your eyes widen as the metal door swings open and you clutch the pile of clothes up against you. You freeze in the doorway, blinking hard and swallowing, as if you’ve only just realized where you are. I wasn’t sure you were ever going to move, and maybe you wouldn’t have, if the guard hadn’t tapped you on the arm and propelled you into the room.

My Soft Spot. Runner-Up in If Walls Could Talk.
“If walls could talk.” Yeah. People say that all the time. But do they ever listen? We rumble and fall, creak and groan. We crack and ache, listening to the mundane and the weird, the exciting, the pitiful, without any choice in the matter.

Being is Enough. Runner-Up in If Walls Could Talk.
If walls could talk. Some people look at a wall and think there could be nothing worse than staying in one place your entire life. Never moving, never going, never leaving. “Life’s about getting out of your comfort zone” and all that.

Mind Waves of Power. Runner-Up in If Walls Could Talk.
If walls could talk, then you'd be in a lot of trouble. The whole lot of you. But especially you. I am your wall, and I've been holding your secrets. Closets don't hold skeletons like I do. I've got all the brittle bone dust of each and everyone of your deceits, your selfish exploits; all the schemes right from the control center of your life. Every last one of them.

A Terrible Thing. Runner-Up in If Walls Could Talk.
“If walls could talk,” I heard her whisper absently, as she sat on the top stair of my sagging porch under a dark sky. Barefoot, jeans rolled up past her ankles, Diana fixed her gaze on a horizon she couldn't see and barely blinked at all. A single cigarette sat alongside a book of matches from Frankie's Pub and Pizzeria on the buckled gray boards beside her. No bugs chirruped or buzzed in the night; no nocturnal scavengers rattled around the rusty trashcans out back. The big yellow dog rested her head on her paws and silently stared out into the same abyss as Diana, eyes glistening.

When the Demons Ride from Hell. Runner-Up in If Walls Could Talk.
In Whitechapel, no one questioned if walls could talk. It was only a matter of what stories they would tell. Where some walls held secrets, the walls in this pocket of the city held revelations. Dark truths. Memories of sights that could shake the foundation of a world that was still trying to take shape.

Hello Back.... Runner-Up in If Walls Could Talk.
If walls could talk, would anyone even hear me over the wind rattling all the loose parts. The forgotten rooms and broken windows. The fraying wallpaper and crumbling bricks. Fireplaces that were once filled with warm flickering flames, now just dance with shadows and leaves. Cabinets stocked with cobwebs and doors that clang in the gusts, teetering on their rusted hinges. There are barely any remnants of the lives once lived in front of me.

A Wall in a House. Runner-Up in If Walls Could Talk.
If walls could talk, this one would ask you for a goddamn cigarette right about now. I’m joking, of course. Even if you could supply me with one, I’ve got no arms to light it with, no mouth to suck in the smoke with, and no lungs to be blackened by it, because in case I wasn’t clear- I’m a goddamn wall!
