Lipstick Color Names: The Real O'G of the Beauty Industry

And the top 10 most creative names

As a little girl, lipstick wasn't just makeup. It was an expression of my identity and a way to make a statement. As a teen in a private girl's school, lipstick was banned, and it made it that much more enticing to wear it outside of school. So much so, that I'd go for the deep red, the purples, and anything that shows that a girl with lipstick, just can't be ignored.

Now, in my adulthood, not much has changed. The only real game-changer is the brands to choose from and the color names. Between the 1000s of red shades, I want to know, which one of them I'm looking for. And I LOVE that there was a creative genius behind each of the lipstick color names.

Before lipsticks, shades of colors would be identified as a number, like PANTONE 7626 C or something. But the beauty industry was better than that. And well, they sold us mini pieces of art that we could paint on our lips of course!

Lipstick names are a savior. I mean, I'm all about matching the colors with skin tone and outfits, but come on, who doesn't get influenced by their lip color name?

If I'm walking out the door hoping to look like Beyonce, I ain't got time to wear a lippy called "Plane Jane". But hey, I'm not dissing Jane, there are days where I'd rather sit at a coffee shop, reading a book, and wearing more of that Plane Jane kinda shade...

And I do wonder, what's the inspiration behind the creative color names?

I mean, does the designer put on that shade of lipstick and imagine what they feel like wearing it? Or perhaps they look at the color itself, and imagine what vibe the color gives off? Whatever the reason, I'm honored to be part of the story. Wearing the lipstick they imagined it to be and creating my own spice to it.

So here's my pick of the top 10 most creative lipstick color names:

#1. God's Gift by Jeffree Star Cosmetics

Okay so not an everyday look, but I'm sure there's a Halloween party to slay as Ice Queen...

#2. Scattered Petals by M.A.C

This one makes me think about two cuties on a date in the summertime going for a romantic walk by the water...

#3. Unicorn Blood by Jeffree Star Cosmetics

Okay, so this one gives off major badass vibes. I mean, you probably wouldn't be wearing this one to a Sunday dinner. But you could wear it to the afterparty...

#4. Russian Red by M.A.C

If you want to make a statement, you literally can wear this shade with anything. Okay, maybe not with a bright green outfit though. Unless it's Christmas...

#5. Venus Fly Trap by Jeffree Star Cosmetics

Yep, another one you could probably only wear to a Halloween party...or a rave.

#6. Pirate by Chanel

You can be a quirky pirate...or a classy boss-ass bitch. Pick your vibe.

#7. Model Behaviour by M.A.C

This one's a bit of a wild one. But if you can pull it off...then you go, girl!

#8. Crimson and Clover By ILIA

Another classic red, but with a hint of orange. I can imagine creative people wearing this one.

#9. Birthday Suit by Jeffree Star Cosmetics

A natural look can still stand out, especially when you're in your birthday suit...

#10. Bitten Peach by Bobby Brown

This one gives me Bella Swan from Twilight vibes. It might be in the name, or it could be in the color. Either way, it's cute AF.

So, the next time you go to choose your lipstick color, pause, turn it around, upside down, and think to yourself: "Is this the kind of vibe I want to give off today?"...
