Music Speaks Volumes

Music. The average American consumer spent 26.9 hours listening to music each week in 2019. A definite increase in 2020 statistics, after a year of lockdown. Music became more important. Tik Tok, I'm sure you've all heard of it, well with 800 million monthly users, the main feature is the music backed videos that have caused all the major trends in 2020, the pop music industry is almost reliant. But what does all this mean, are we becoming reliant on music to bring us through hard times? would the world end as we know it?

The simple answer is we are. by looking at numbers, it speaks volumes. Spotify has 286 million monthly listeners, Apple music has 72 million subscribers. These are the big fish in the sea. The average American spends 26.9 hours a week listening to music. music brings us together, it creates undescribable atmospheres, it changes peoples lives. It inspires us, it drives us to be better every day without us knowing.

Music has a powerful effect on the brain. endorphins are the key to this, when we listen to music, they are released. Reduced anxiety, excitement, euphoric sensation. Music goes so far it even connects with the automatic nervous system. It is so powerful it can have an impact on our limbic system(emotions and feelings). This is found in no other source. That is the power in music. Music inspires me, as I am writing this I'm listening to music, a great sense of creativity is within me. I find myself over and over again listening to music to help me. To save me from my thoughts. Music will have definitely impact you in some way.

Some of my earliest memories revolve around music. I remember listening to classical music in my dad's car, the notes to resonate within me, it is crazy to think that music created centuries ago, is still listened to. Productivity and peace are created from classical music. It is still innovation and should not be forgotten. Music nowadays will come nowhere near as close to the classics. Modern music is like your 3rd cousin. When you are dying you will ask, who are they? Even music from the 60s, 70s and 80s still and will always have more of an impact than modern music.

Live Aid in 1985. Will always and forever be known as the greatest concert of all time. It managed to bring together 40% of the world's population. That's 1.9 billion people. We would come nowhere near as close nowadays. 150 nations involved 16 hours of unity all for one cause. To bring relief to the famine in Ethiopia. How we would manage that nowadays? We couldn't.

Iconic a true highlight of the 20th century. Performances by various artists that day are still enjoyed by millions. Phil Collins, one of the great drummers of that era managed to perform in both London and Philadelphia. That is no longer possible. A true once in a lifetime spectacle enjoyed by 1.9 billion people.

Not only does music have a grip hold on society. It also drives research in the field of medicine. A study completed by the General Hospital of Salzburg in Austria found that patients recovering from back surgery who listened to music would see a reduction in pain without the need for medication. Furthermore, a group of Finish researchers found that stroke victims who listened to music for a couple of hours a day, would gain back their verbal memory and focused attention back quicker than patients that didn't. These studies not only show the power of music but they also raise the question of what else music can do for us? Are there cures for illnesses that no medicine can treat to within music?

Have we only touched the tip of a massive iceberg that is music? Will we see further breakthroughs in society and medicines? I feel that we will it is a new thing to include music into rehabilitation, it needs further research and study to unleash music full potential.

As a whole the world will end without music but not physically, I mean the world's society, it is the only human creation that brings people together, for one thing, not to fight but to celebrate. It brings together communities, builds bridges, saves peoples lives. The benefits of music are endless. It will never be lost. But if it somehow did expect the world to be lost with it soon after.
