Weeekly recently made their comeback with “Afterschool” along with the mini album, “We Play.” The girls are back with another colorful and poppy comeback, and I’m so glad they are back. Weeekly are on of my favorite groups and I adore their music, so let;s just jump right into it and talk about “After School”

After School:

“After School” is quite a vibrant and nostalgic track, which is Weeekly signature sound. With their previous tracks “Tag Me” and “Zig Zag”, the main subject matter of their songs is about youth and friendship, which is an amazing subject to express. Especially since all the girls are so young, oldest being Soojin born in 2001, and youngest being Zoa born in 2005. It is also a subject in music that seems to be dying down in kpop. Usually girl groups sing about love or being confident and strong. Now don’t get it twisted, I enjoy plenty of songs about love or confidence, but it’s so refreshing to hear a song about just having fun with friends and enjoying your youth.

“After School” is just so sweet, and I love the cute, vibrant, and fun concept Weeekly is going for because similar to what I just said, cute concepts have been dying in the kpop scene. Also the way they are doing cute concepts is a bit unique, especially with girl groups. Many cute concepts by girl groups are about love, but Weeekly made it more about the adventures of growing up and friendship.

Also I just love how their music videos are intertwined with each other. “Tag Me” took place in class and focused on a regular school day. Then “Zig Zag” focused on clubs and extracurricular activities that take place once the last bell rings. Lastly “After School” focuses on what happens after school and the excitement of a long school day finally being over, and now can have fun with friends. I love how it is like an overlapping story that makes school feel way more fun than it is.

They also put a spin on it in “After School” because in that song it leans a bit into teen crush. It has a bit of a cool element to it, and in this second comeback it feels like they are that group of girls in highschool that everyone wants to be friends with. Especially in their styling, that feels more streetwear, but they still keep that bubblegum element in their concept.

With the actual song itself, it is perfect. I love the message, how fun it is, the references to “Zig Zag” and “Tag Me”, and how emotional it is. The girls sing from the heart in this song, and is such a joyous song that reminds me of the good moments I had in middle school and highschool. Honestly, middle school was horrible for me and highschool wasn’t any better, but this song makes me think of the good times I had during those years and just makes me so giddy. You can’t help but smile and think of happy moments you shared with people you love.

Then I love the instrumental. In the instrumental, there are sounds of like plastic which makes it pop even more, and it is a great bubblegum pop song. Then the chorus is so catchy, and the girls play with the instrumental so well. Now the chorus instrumental is a bit simple, but the girls voices go from Monday’s deep voice to Jihan and Jaehee high voices, back to Soeun deep voice, which makes the song so bouncy. It’s like their vocals are an instrument themselves.

Overall I love this comeback. It is so fresh, fun, and overall sweet. “After School” is definitely a 10/10 and a perfect song, and I am so happy that Weeekly is sticking with this cute and youthful concept, because it is quite refreshing in today's kpop scene.
