The Perfect Playlist for the Zombie Apocalypse
Let's get pumped for the undead!
With The Walking Dead returning on February 10th, I felt it was appropriate to create a playlist that could put people in the mood to fight some zombies. Ranging from Johnny Cash to Imagine Dragons, epic to somber, these are songs that can strangely make us think of the undead. So, who's ready for the apocalypse?
Let's start with the most obvious, on the nose pick. "Zombie," by the Cranberries, was a smash hit in the 1990's. One can't help but think of zombies when this alternative rock song come on the radio.
"Natural" was one of Imagine Dragon's many hits from their latest album Origins. Not only is it an epic rock song, it includes lyrics that can relate to living in a zombie world such as "rather be the hunter than the prey." It's something to think about while being chased by a brain eating monster.

If you are a zombie, ain't no grave can hold your body down. This legendary country song could also motivate one to continue the fight. With The Man in Black in your ears, nothing can stop you. There's nothing to lose.
This an epic cover of "Survivor" by Destiny's Child. The dramatic tune was featured in the official trailer for Tomb Raider (2018). If you can face a horde of zombies head on, then you're a survivor who's not gonna give up. You can do anything!
When there's zombies, there's trouble. Bellstop is a rock/folk band from Iceland. Their music is a perfect blend of southern Gothic appeal and Americana. The song trouble could prep you for the best zombie hunt ever. You can check out Bellstop on their Facebook and website.
The nineties hip-hop group, Beastie Boys, brings in the punch on "Sabotage." With this song, you can go to war on those zombies, and start with a bang. Now, go sabotage the undead's plans!
Could you tranquilize a zombie? Maybe, it's worth a try. The Killer's edgy rock song features the late and great Lou Reed from The Velvet Underground. "Tranquilize" experiments with some blues and southern rock that is fitting for a zombie environment.

You're bound to raise some hell with zombies on the attack. Dorothy is an American rock band from Los Angeles named after lead singer Dorothy Martin. The edgy banger, "Raise Hell" is that song with the power to make anyone feel like a bad ass. They may not be the most well known band, bout they're on their way for sure. Check them out on Facebook.
Lead singer Robert Plant's incredible voice makes Immigrant Song even more epic. The opening of the song is enough to make one go on an adventurous rampage. Some of the lyrics can be synonymous to living in the undead times.
How soft your fields so green, can whisper tales of gore.
An apocalyptic world could seem like a jungle. X Ambassadors made a rocking hit with British singer Jamie N Commons. So, let's follow zombies into the jungle.

Speaking of the jungle, this innovate rock group from the 1960s and 1970s brings alive southern goth at its finest. "Run Through The Jungle" creates a gritty and dirty world for your zombie war. Better run and hide in the jungle before you get eaten alive!
When a swarm of the walking dead is approaching, it's to fight them off with a seven nation army. Jack White's band makes a memorable bluesy rock song for your own army to command.
I'm gonna fight 'em all, a seven nation army couldn't hold me back...And the stains coming from my blood, tell me go back home.
"Kill and Run" was first featured on the soundtrack for The Great Gatsby (2013). Even with that in mind, the song perfectly describes the life of surviving zombies. There's usually lots of killing and lots of running involved. It may not be the most uplifting or blood-pumping song, but does remain one of the danger and despair living in the end of the world.
Gotta find some shelter in the apocalypse. This iconic hit from the legendary rock group Rolling Stones could make you want to board up your windows and doors. Then you can grab your pick axes and shot guns.
Fighting zombie can be exhausting. It can make you tired, make you feel like you can't take it anymore. The 1980's hit by Twisted Sister expresses all those feelings. However, it also has the rock and roll power to build you back up and keep on fighting. So, if you want a good fight with a zombie, this is your song. A modern cover by J2 is also an excellent pick. Uncle Vanya.
For the modern theater lover "Uncle Vanya" at Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont Theater may very well be for you. This "Vanya" is not the typical play by Chekhov; in its new rendition by Heidi Schreck, we get more modern language, modern costumes (Kaye Voyce) and modern direction by Lila Neugebauer. Vanya (Steve Carell) has spent most of his life farming the land so that Alexander (Alfred Molina) can carry on with his art studies as a celebrated professor and teacher. Both Molina and Carell as well as Alison Pill as Sonya are standouts in this production, laying waste to all the other actors in the cast. Where the sound resonates in this well appointed theater (Mikhail Fiksel and Beth Lake), the sets by Mimi Lien are unimpressive. Lap Chi Chu gives us the support on lighting and her moods vary well amongst this two hours and fifteen minutes. "Uncle Vanya" is slow at times, very slow due to Neugebauer's direction. Actors don't always blend well causing pockets of weakness in the dialogue. Both William Jackson Harper as Astrov and Anika Noni Rose as Elena cannot hold the stage nor the attention of the audience. Since the show is put in modern language, these two actors appear more like people in the inner city rather than stage professionals; even their body language goes anathema to this great classic. In a slow-go of this play, the show does pick up almost half way through the first act. The dialogue and the melding of characters never fully catches its stride however. We get a mesh-mosh of thoughts, feelings and adversity, but the true feelings are never brought to the forefront emotionally. At the end of the play we get to hear Vanya rant about his feelings, how he gave up his life for the farm which is weakly portrayed at the back of the theater. The audience never feels his pain as Carell holds back and we never feel the strong emotions. More comedic than serious, he is at his best when the show has him bantering about. In Voyce's costumes we get both the elegant and the mundane. Never overwhelmed by the garb, it fades away like much of this play does. For the modern theater lover, however, there are a lot of things in this show that you will like. The sets which never really blend with the show are intricate and give meaning to the modern. The deft sound keeps the play eery at times especially with the reverbs at different times during the performance. The backdrop in the second act is clever even though it is difficult to sift through the conventional writings of Chekhov... it goes against the grain of what we have seen in the past. "Uncle Vayna" is a mixed bag and is not for everyone, it takes the conventional completely out of the picture and puts us in the new world of modern.
