The Twenty-Fifth Edition of Rate-O-Rama features three renditions of the Reggae classic: โOne Love/People Get Ready."
๐ธ๐น๐ฅ๐บ๐ผ
Bob Marley and the Wailers (1977)
The legendary Bob Marley wrote โOne Loveโ which was released on Marley and the Wailers' first album The Walking Wailers in 1965. This early upbeat ska rendition of the song was also released as a single in the same year. In 1977 Marley re-recorded the song with a slower roots reggae tempo for the classic album Exodus. โOne Loveโ quickly became a highlight of the album.
In this instance, we are reviewing the famous 1977 recording.
When Exodus was released โOne Loveโ was retitled to โOne Love / People Get Ready.โ This confused people as they thought maybe it was a medley of two songs. This version gives songwriting credits to both Bob Marley and Curtis Mayfield (as Island Records wanted to avoid copyright problems), as it contains part of the melody of the Impressions' song "People Get Ready", written by Mayfield.
The song was released as a single in 1984, three years after Marley's untimely death from cancer in 1981 at the age of 36. This time, the song became a huge hit throughout Europe and Oceania. The song did not chart in the US, but it helped boost the sales of the compilation album Legend, which has sold more than 12 million copies in the US.

Gipsy Kings (2001)
This popular Spanish-influenced French group recorded โOne Loveโ in 2001. The song was released as a single in Europe and was added as a bonus track on the European and Japanese releases of their 2001 album Somos Gitanos.
The Gipsy Kings' rendition contains both English and Spanish lyrics.

The Glee Cast (2010)
The musical comedy-drama Glee has released numerous albums and singles dating back to 2009.
One Love (People Get Ready) by Bob Marley & The Wailers is featured in Never Been Kissed, the sixth episode of Season Two of Glee. It was recorded as a duet and is sung by Artie (Kevin McHale) and Puck (Mark Salling).
Puck decides to help Artie as part of his community service, to which Artie agrees, so Puck decides the two of them should sing together to make money. Artie is unsure whether they are allowed to sing for money in the school and thinks that it's a "bad-ass" idea. They were successful, and both got good feedback and made three hundred dollars from the students at McKinley.
This version of โOne Loveโ charted at #41 in the US, #32 in Canada, and #104 in the UK.

My Thoughts

Bob Marley and The Wailers:
Bob Marley experienced worldwide success with his music during his life. But it wasn't until after his death that he became an enduring legend throughout the world. His music has resonated with people from all ages and walks of life.
Marley's โOne Loveโ is cherished around the world and is the song most identified with him.
When I hear this song I get feelings of inspiration and unconditional love flowing through my body. I hear so much of the Jamaican culture as Bob Marley sings his beautiful words. But it is so much more than just the Jamaican culture, Bob Marley was reaching out with a call for universal love and a call for unification of all the people of the world.
Marley's voice resonates with me as I hear him sing this song and I love the laid-back feeling of the musical arrangement.
There is only one rating for this inspirational song: 100

The Gipsy Kings:
I really like how the Gipsy Kings incorporated Spanish language lyrics into this song which further heightens the universal language of love. The vocals are great and I love the joyous flamenco musical arrangement. 94

The Glee Cast (Mark Salling and Kevin McHale):
When it comes to the Glee Cast you are going to expect nothing less than pitch-perfect vocals. We definitely get that with this rendition of โOne Love.โ But more importantly, both Mark Salling and Kevin McHale perform the song with a feeling of joy and inspired emotion. I also like the light reggae acoustic guitar strumming throughout. My score is 95.

Nice song choice! This song makes my soul dance! Bob gets 100. His version is simply anointed! The Glee Cast tore it up as well. it felt earnest & heartfelt. They also get 100. The Gypsy Kings did well also. They were unique. They get a 97.
I know itโs too late for voting but it was wonderful to again hear this wonderful song from Bob Marleyโฆ so joyful with beautiful lyricsโฆ canโt go past it โค๏ธ
I'm not big on reggae music, but I can't help but smile when Bob Marley sings anything- 98 The Spanish version was cool. I'm not sure if I like that it's sped up a bit, otherwise great rendition. 95 The Glee boys have great vocals. However, I got the impression they were trying to sing like Jason Mraz. I don't know. It just didn't work for me. 80
I mirror everyone else with Bob Marley's being 100. I'd rather the other two round 50, nice clear vocals, but it dosen't feel right without Marley's voice.
Glad I remembered the new Rate-o-rama was out after I missed last week's! Bob Marley - 100 I'm like you, Rick. It fills me with goodness. That sort of lazy upbeatness, relaxed and calm just makes this song. Gypsy Kings - 30 Nope. I did not like this. Too harsh, too fast. Takes away the mellow heart of Marley's and replaces it with something tinny. Nope. Glee - 70 Like the harmonies but it's too warbly for me. Lovely clear voices redeem it.

Bob Marley is fantastic, as always. I'm not ALL-in with reggae, but it's very fun and calming to listen to for a little while. The length is perfect, in my opinion, not too much time for it to get *gasp* boring. ๐ I also feel his version is the most authentic; you can tell he believes the lyrics he's singing. 100 I LOVE the Gipsy Kings. Their covers aren't always the best; I like their originals more, and their instrumentals are sublime. ("Volare" might be the only cover they do that I really really like.) This one is different enough to be jarring but the longer I listened, the better I liked it. Definitely had a great groove, and the vocalists were entertaining; different than the OG version, very THEM, lol. Plus, I like them singing in their language; it's beautiful and a good way to do a cover. They're so talented on those guitars! Only thing I didn't like was the female back-up singers, who are usually not present in their music. They just took me out of it, made the song sound less gypsy and more "stadium" I guess. Off brand. 95 Glee: Way too sanitized. I like music to sound rustic, authentic, real. This felt like an album cover that's been perfected. It's not BAD, just, it's clear that the intention was to showcase the singers. Loved the harmonies and the rhythm. I just think the whole purpose of THIS SONG is to focus on the larger scope of the lyrics. I didn't feel like the singers were authentic to that. 50 Great song this week, Rick! This was so enjoyable!
Marley: 95 Gypsy Kings: 50 Glee: 100 It's been a while since I've listen to the Gypsy Kings version, but I just couldn't get into it like the other two. Bob Marley is the original and so well done, but Glee just did it better. The blend between Mark (RIP) and Kevin is perfect. They are both soulful singers with different tones with makes it easier to detect both voices when they are harmonizing. Plus the moments when they do a call and response. Oh, I just love it! Now excuse me while I go and play the song a few times.
Glee: 90 Marley: 85 Gypsy Kings: 75
Marley 100+ Gypsy Kings 100 Glee Cast 99
My rating according to how the music and vocals make me feel. Anything else is irrelevant to me when itโs about music. 1st - Bob Marley the Great 100. There is no comparison to the energy and love he puts on the song and how it comes through. No one does it better. And no one makes me like the song as BM does. Making an effort to be generous on these: 2nd Glee 25 3rd The Gypsy Kings 15
Bob Marley: 100 (Could we have a second perfect score?) The Gypsy Kings: 95 (They did a really good job of making it their own.) Glee: 95 (Glee was one of our son's favorite shows--& ours as well, not by extension but on its own merits.)
Give it up for Bob....100 Glee...70 Gypsy 50 But then being Jamaicans Randy below and myself are biased to our Bob. oi.
