Five songs that helped me bloom.

Lessons in life come from places, people, patience... just to name a few.

As a creative who finds inspiration in books and solitude, music has been a large part of these life lessons.

~

I want to take you on a coming-of-age journey through my vast listening experiences, and hopefully help you build your own rose-tinted glasses.

Here are 5 of the most thought provoking songs that allowed me to become the person I am today.

~

The mother of growth is a change of perspective… so let’s bloom together.

~

Dime Store Cowgirl - Kacey Musgraves

My first 'real' job was working in a mid-sized coffee shop chain in Britain and one month after starting my training, I experienced my first real heartbreak. Anyone who has had their heart broken in their ripe teenage years will understand the chaos and lack of self-esteem this can bring.

Luckily I had some incredibly supportive co-workers, and a manager that shaped my entire professional life to come. In the months to come, I was moving away to university as well.

But that lost feeling prevailed.

And it was relentless.

~

In the quiet period before closing shop one day, I heard this song begin and something about it really awoke some fight inside me.

This song speaks to so many layers of my experience, but the main take away was that the world may be big, exciting, even scary sometimes... but nothing can come close to the peace you feel at home.

For me, home was never a place. I have always had quite a transient view on 'home', but I have found a home in community, friends, and myself.

In this period of my life where I relied heavily on the kindness of my friends for comfort, this song paved the way for me to accept this was the home Kacey Musgraves was speaking of - it just meant something different to me.

~

Fast Car - Tracy Chapman

The beauty of Tracy Chapman's lyrics throughout her career have inspired my writing for years... well, the years I really understood them.

I think everybody reading this will have heard a version of this song in their lifetime, but less have deeply heard it's meaning.

~

Much like the rest of Britain, I listened to this song frequently on the radio and knew every word. When you stop singing, for me this is when the fear starts to tiptoe its way inside my head.

My worst fear is to waste my life believing passively that my situation or circumstances will change, only to wake up one morning as an 80-year-old woman and see that my life has gone, having lived it all in the passenger seat.

Worse still, that I wrongly relied on my beliefs in someone else to change my life for me.

This song is the ultimate wake-up call. To seize the day, grab what you deserve, and make brave decisions without hesitation.

~

Berenstein - The Band CAMINO

Something incredible happened within myself when I heard this song as I was writing one day. The themes of my writing are an exploration into my views on life, love, and the journey to finding your place in this world.

The idea of alternate universes wasn't something I had ever explored before discovering this beautiful expedition into what is lost between space and time, as well as between each other.

~

Letting go has always been hard for me, I like to be in control and knowledgeable in all aspects of my life and this song opened the doors to allowing something else in...

The trust that everything that is happening or not happening, working or not working, seen or invisible to me, are all meant to be. On a spiritual level, this song evokes a lot of peace and tranquillity that previously eluded me.

This maybe one of the most underappreciated songs of the list. As this piece is how the song resonates with me, I will include an article that dives into the themes and imagery.

~

Moment's Silence (Common Tongue) - Hozier

From start to finish, this song is pure pleasure.

As someone who began their adult life very out of touch with my sexuality, along with many other areas of what made me who I am, 'Moment's Silence' is one of the songs I listen to for empowerment.

~

Taking the time to really immerse yourself in this piece should awaken your inner sensuality. With complex and stunning imagery of worship and devotion, a new perspective of sex and intimacy will develop in your soul.

Unlocking your deepest desires, sexual or otherwise, is an incredibly profound experience that should be a part of how you really, truly become your higher self and experience the intimacy everyone should expect in a relationship.

~

Can't Buy Happiness - Tash Sultana

The hard-hitting serenity of this song's introduction that develops into a passionate exposure of emotion reminds me of the waves of strong emotions - such as grief, sadness, and even love.

'Can't Buy Happiness' has an almost trance-like quality that helps me delve into my inner self, to genuinely understand and sit with the emotions I am struggling with.

~

I came upon this song by accident when I was studying, and I was transported to a place of deep thought - something I used to find impossible when I was overwhelmed.

Unpacking all of the feelings that surround your life when you are healing can be traumatic. It becomes inaccessible if you are new to this level of self-understanding.

This for me is where music comes in. Unlocking the potential you have inside, within the comfort of their limited minutes. Guiding you with familiar sounds in new tessellations.

~

And that is the importance of music on your blooming journey.
