7 Incredible Songs Guaranteed To Pump Up Your Nerd (Or Geek) Heart
What songs would make your list?
Music is an integral part of most of our lives. From listening in the car, singing with friends, hanging out at live events, our favorite music brings out the best in us. Sadly, it also can bring out the worst in us.
When I was a child, carrying my trumpet case around school earned mocking criticism from most kids not band affiliated. However, the girls who came to school all decked out in New Kids On The Block merchandise the night after the group's concert were celebrated with awe and envy. Everything was so backward in the 90s. Can you even picture a girl dressed in New Kids' merch today and not chuckle a bit?
Long ago, it was considered nerdy or geeky to play an instrument that was not a guitar or a drum. It probably still is to an extent, but society tends to change its mind on certain topics as years go by; this is especially true for nerds and geeks of the world.
Luckily for all of us in the human race, we get older and wiser as time goes by. Thanks to the internet and brainy geniuses in the world, being a nerd or geek is relatively significant now. Look at today's most popular movies, most center on comic book characters that have been around eighty or more years. These days, people realize how great nerd and geek culture is, and the world is better for it.
This revelation brings us to the purpose of this write-up, nerdy music. Through many years of music, especially the 90s, when the word nerd or geek came up in a song, it was usually a parody. Mocking nerds for their obsession with comic books or the way geeks dress or using terms from popular nerd activities, like Dungeons & Dragons, made any song written "for geeks and nerds" fall flat to the intended audience.
A few years ago, I started wondering if there were songs written that properly celebrate the nerd and geek culture; a song that captures the nerd vibe, a song that will pump a geek up and inspire them, a song that makes people proud to be a nerd or geek. Once this idea hit my mind, I started searching out these songs and adding them to playlists.
My criteria for finding songs of this caliber boiled down to a couple of things:
1. The song must not be a parody. Weird Al Yankovic, I am sorry, this means you, (Pssst, I still love you Weird Al.)
2. The song can mention nerd and geek culture but only in a smart way—for example, the song "Nerd Anthem" by Marian Call. Her song is pleasant, well written, and well performed. However, the song leans heavily on listing things nerds love—Aragorn, argyle socks, square rimmed glasses—you get it. To me, it seems the song is meant for the listener to say, "Oh, I love those things too! This song is so clever." Let me reiterate, mentioning things nerds love is not a disqualifying factor, as you will see.
These simple criteria are what I used to create this list of seven songs. A list many years in the making. Making this list was not an easy task, but I did my research— spending many hours over the years discovering songs that satisfied my nerd appeal. To see if you agree and without further ado, I give you the
7 Incredible Songs Guaranteed To Pump Up Your Nerd (Or Geek) Heart
1. "Mr. Roboto" — The Protomen.
The Protomen brought their powerful performance of "Mr. Roboto" back just in time to give nerds the boost they need to succeed,
" I'm not a robot without emotions, I'm not what you see
I've come to help you with your problems, so we can be free"
Shout out to all the cellphones and tablets out there.
2. "Mis-Shapes" — Pulp
"Mis-Shapes'" motivational lyrics also seem prophetic, with nerd culture's growth in popularity in the 25 years since the song's release,
"Brothers, sisters, can't you see?
The future's owned by you and me
There won't be fighting in the street
They think they've got us beat
But revenge is going to be so sweet, oh-oh-oh
We're making a move, we're making it now…
We won't use guns, we won't use bombs
We'll use the one thing we've got more of
That's our minds."
Geek minds are potent things, ask Gamestop and Robinhood.
3. "Remember Me" — Sage The Gemini
Nerds, rap to your haters and to those who never understood you,
"Remember me, remember me
F*** the cool crowd, b**** I'm a nerd."
I need not say more.
4. "Mass Nerder" — Descendants
As a nerd, I will not face my enemies in the ring or on the battlefield,
"But I'll kick their a**es
When I get to class"
I will defeat them with good grades; you better believe that.
5. "Grow Up" — Mega Ran
Grow Up's hook accurately defines the attitude for nerds everywhere. When it comes to being a nerd,
"I just can't seem to grow up
I said I just can't seem to grow up
But you know what? (WHAT~!)
I don't think I want to"
Growing up is for nonnerds.
6. "Critical Hit" — No More Kings
When Dungeons & Dragons terms written into a song is done correctly, we get an amazing experience,
"We make a plan of attack, we're fighting back to back
Gonna have to stack a little slash and hack
They keep on missing me with no dexterity
Wait until they hear the chorus
Sooner or later the dice land on the table
You know that's what fables are made of
Everybody sing, oh yeah, it's a critical hit"
Words are a nerd's Strength (STR).
7. "The Geeks Will Inherit The Earth" — I Fight Dragons
This song was released in 2011. Ten years later, the world cannot say they were not warned,
"We were the ones you used to make fun of
We stayed at home alone instead of falling in love
We never got the chance to be prom king
We didn't even dance but here's the thing...
We got the cars
We got the money
We need some sun but I'm tellin' you honey...
That the geeks will, geeks will, we will inherit the earth"
Stand back world. The earth is ours now.
