Short Film Reviews: "The" Movies
The Springfield Three: Starting off the list, we have a horror short inspired by a real-life unsolved mystery. On the night of June 7th, 1992, three women from Springfield, Missouri disappeared without a trace: recent high school graduates Suzanne Streeter and Stacy McCall (Ashlynn Yennie and Gigi Gustin) and Suzanne's mother Sherrill Levitt (Natalija Nogulich). To this day, authorities and the public are still unsure about what happened to them. Given the enigmatic nature of this case, it makes sense that Samuel Gonzalez Jr. takes such a surreal approach to his dramatization of the Springfield Three's final hours before vanishing. Befitting such a perplexing mystery, Gonzalez Jr.'s interpretation of what might've happened to the women has a morbid dreamlike atmosphere and plays around with time and reality.

Out of the Darkness, Into the Light
A continuation of Summer in the Shadows, Secrets, Betrayal and Chocolate, and Prisoner of a False God Lacey had never run so far so fast. The second she was out of the farmhouse that had served as her prison for weeks, Lacey was charging down the street. She took care to go in the opposite direction of town, not wanting to risk running back into the arms of her captor: her own father. For what felt like miles, there wasn't a single house to be found. But even with her lungs on the verge of collapsing, the desperate girl refused to slow her sprint. She feared that if she slowed down, her father would somehow catch up to her and drag her kicking and screaming back to that room.

Film Review: 'The Crumbs'
In the small woodside town of Bainsville, the Crumbs operate a seemingly quaint little bed-and-breakfast. The family consists of Dr. Benjamin Crumb (Jeff Hatch), his mother Irene (Marie Olsen), and his daughter Victoria (Chelsea Jurkiewicz). From the outside looking in, they might appear to be an unconventional but harmless family. But underneath their warm smiles and old-timey clothing, the Crumbs operate a disturbing side business. In his laboratory, Benjamin uses unsuspecting B&B visitors as unwilling test subjects to aid in his scientific work: to stunt the aging process and keep the gravely sick Victoria alive. Once they've served their purpose, his friend/"assistant" Leonard (Anton Clark) disposes of the remains.

A Brutal Boat Trip
It was the perfect day to take the boat out. Christine was sold on the expedition the second I suggested it. Summer was well underway, and my nature-loving shutterbug girlfriend was more than excited to get some shots of the ocean as it came alive under the July sky. After a fair amount of begging, she convinced me to let Scott tag along for the trip. As she explained, he was a co-worker at the photography studio she worked at who she bonded with over how they were both insatiable photo geeks. I usually didn't permit strangers from commandeering the boat my late great father passed down to me, but for my girl's best friend, I was willing to make an exception.

Prisoner of a False God
Continuation of Summer in the Shadows and Secrets, Betrayal and Chocolate Lacey awoke to a heavy head and a dimly lit room. The only source of light was a battery-powered lantern in the corner. After her head pains subsided, Lacey looked around and saw a door across from her. Stumbling to her feet, Lacey rushed to the door, only to have her hopes of an easy escape dashed by the unmovable knob. Banging on the walls and shouting for help yielded similar results. Turning around, Lacey suddenly took notice of something on the ground that she'd stepped over in her rush to the door.

Secrets, Betrayal, and Chocolate
A continuation of Summer in the Shadows The sight that greeted Lacey when she entered the dining room was an unexpected one. Usually, when she got home from cashiering at the local Dollar General, her father would either be in the living room watching TV or preparing a new sermon in his office. Instead, he sat at the table, engrossed in the worn-leather Bible that had gone through three generations before reaching his hands. More notably, a chocolate cake sat in the middle of the table, the smell wafting from it telling Lacey it had recently come out of the oven. Two slices were already cut from the confection and resting on a pair of plates.
