The Secret to Long-Term Weight Loss
We’ve all heard the standard advice for losing weight: “Eat less and move more.” Dr. Jason Fung, author of “The Obesity Code,” refers to this advice as having “a perfect record unblemished by success.” Anyone who has tried to lose weight using this technique knows it doesn’t work long-term. Sure, you start to lose weight for a few weeks, and it feels great—worth the extra hunger pangs! Then, while pushing through the hunger and the desire to skip a day at the gym, your weight loss stalls. Soon after, ounces start coming back and become pounds—and before you know it, you are back to where you started six months earlier.

Breakfast: It’s What Was for Lunch
We often hear doctors and nutritionists say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I’ve heard such reminders as “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper,” to emphasize the importance of that morning meal. Now, however, there is a growing trend to skip this morning meal. The practice of Intermittent Fasting (IF) has been a major influence in shunning breakfast. One of the easiest forms of IF is what’s called the 16:8 Protocol. When following the 16:8 IF Protocol, one typically eats lunch and dinner within an 8-hour window and then nothing until lunch the next day. Sorry, not sorry, breakfast.

A Long-Lost Secret
If you do a search on Amazon for books about nutrition, you’ll find there are over 40,000 titles available. Add the word “diet” to the search and you pick up at least an additional 10,000 titles. How could there be so much written about a subject that other species just know about intuitively?

Monk, but from Finland
Monk is a fun, formulaic crimody (crime-comedy) series, set in San Francisco. It aired on USA Network for eight seasons: from 2002 to 2009. In the series, Tony Shalhoub plays the title character, Adrian Monk. Monk offered viewers—me among them—an easy-to-watch hour of humorous, but relatively well-developed mysteries, solved by a likable group of detectives. Adrian Monk, in particular, is a charming character. His brilliance as a detective, however, is counterbalanced by his melancholy demeanor (after the death of his wife), fear of germs and general OCD-driven behavior. When it aired, it was one of the most popular shows on television—so you are probably familiar with the show, even if you haven’t seen it.

My Happy Place
I like to sit outside when I write and I prefer to write on paper, with a mechanical pencil. The pencil I use is one I’ve had for 20 years. In fact, the model is so old, the manufacturer no longer makes it. It’s one of those writing implements that holds two ballpoint pens and a mechanical pencil all in one. I have blue and red ink in mine, but I always seem to just use the pencil. Every once in a while I’ll use ink in my notebook, but before long, I’m back to pencil.

Torino--My New Hometown
Torino (Turin) sits in northwestern Italy, at the foot of the Alps. It is the capital city of the Piemonte Region—Piemonte meaning foot of the mountains. The history of Torino goes back thousands of years while my history with the bella città only goes back about three.

The Yellow of BolzanoTop Story - February 2021
On January 5th, 2021, Benno Neumair reported his parents missing from the house they shared on the edge of Bolzano, Italy. Bolzano is in the Alto-Adige region or Italy—northwest of Venice, in the alps, near Liechtenstein. It’s an area where the locals speak German rather than Italian. In fact, when I was at a language school in Bologna, learning Italian, one of the other students at the school was a man from Bolzano. That’s right—he was in his mid-twenties, grew up IN ITALY, and was learning Italian.

What’s Weight Got to Do, Got To Do With It?
If COVID-19 hadn’t shut down most of the gyms already, this would be the time thousands of recent subscribers would be throwing in the towel on their resolutions to lose weight in 2021. This is what typically happens every year. People resolve to lose weight and join a gym to do the active part of their doctor’s or their nutritionist’s advice of “eat less and move more.”

Half the Man I Used to Be
I don’t remember when my weight started to be an issue. I weighed just over 100 pounds by the time I was 10. I was proud of being triple digits and told a friend — he commented “wow, you’re fat.” I had thought I was “husky.” It was then that I realized the word my parents had used when discussing my size meant fat.
