At the Center of It All
It was heavier than I would have liked; it’s stain was nicked; but it was mercifully level. Hector and I had just moved into our freshman dorm and visited a secondhand store to finish furnishing our room. I was lugging a coffee table up four flights of stairs in a building with no elevator. I dropped it on the rug in the middle of the room, exhausted. We both sat on the futon and put our feet up. “What a great purchase, man.” Hector said through a smile.

Synesthesia and Summer
‘“Ah music,” he said, wiping his eyes. “A magic beyond all we do here!”’ JK Rowling uses Dumbledore, a headmaster of a magic school, to remind us the power behind music. It seems to transcend so many other methods of relaxation and recuperation. Music therapy, singing to plants to make them grow, and music and meditation are beyond magic. The right playlist and the right relaxation method can combine for a perfect storm of rejuvenation.

Stock Picking in 2009
Do you ever get a feeling in your head and know that you are right? There is no explanation or concrete evidence that you are right, but the feeling persists. For me, it was picking stocks in 2009. I was a finance major in college and was required to pick a company and do a detailed analysis and compare that stock to another stock in the sector.

Not One for Surprises
To baby number four, The twenty week ultrasound is exhilarating. We have done this three times before, but it is still a terrifically exciting day. Maybe this time it carries a little more weight. You see, you have three older brothers. We were confident baby number three was a girl. We had a little girl’s name at about eight weeks. Then the ultrasound technician said something about there being no doubt it was a boy from this angle. The important thing of course is that your brother was and is healthy, but it still caused us to pause, quietly be dejected for a moment, and move on. Four kids was always the plan right? So, here we are again. The ultrasound technician asks, “Do you want to know if it’s a boy or a girl?”

Oh, Araby
Recently married and first-time homeowners, my wife and I decided to visit our local animal shelter to add to our family. They had just built a bigger building to better serve the area. Fortunately for us, a shelter cat had a litter of kittens that had just reached adoption age, and my wife was going to let me pick which one we took home. In the pen by the front window, the little kittens were playing on the floor and flipping over one another in their mock fights. They were cute, but they all looked the same to me. I watched them a little longer and pet a few, but they were more content with their game and each other than they were with my attempts to pet them. As the sun came out from behind a cloud, light shone on a kitten laying in a bed right in front of the window. She was laying on her side, and the sunlight gave her brown stomach a red hue. I decided to pet her. She immediately began to purr. Between her beautiful coloring and immediate purring, I was hooked. We made our “purchase,” a donation to help the animal shelter continue to help animals find their forever homes. Then we made the trip home.

Destination Addiction
I could not fall asleep last night. The bed was comfortable, the room temperature just right, but my mind was moving too quickly to allow sleep to enter. For some reason, I was struck by the thought that I may be happier if I was working less or at a different place. This thought really came from nowhere. I enjoy my job. It works for my family. And it gives me time to write. So, why was I looking at new positions and different graduate degrees to pursue? Could I become a better writer going through a creative writing program? What if I spent more time on platforms like Vocal and practiced more? Maybe I have the tools already and just need to use them more.

The Wine Bar
Feeding quarters into the parking meter, Shawn took a moment to study her face. Her long brown hair was pulled back accentuating her high cheekbones and slender neck. Her green eyes were electric in the street light. After studying the three-story building across the street, she turned to look at Shawn, catching him analyzing her features. He quickly walked around the car to cover his embarrassment. A few drops of rain began to materialize. He gently touched her lower back, guiding her across the street and under the navy awning. His first impression of Avalon was astounding. Even her name added to her beauty.

The Park Bench
Climbing to the top of the playground was particularly special here. A large blue staircase spiraled upward to a green slide. The tall green slide was nearly three stories high. The afternoon sun was bright, and clouds were scarce. A father and little boy made the climb like they did every day. The little boy squealed as he jumped on his father’s lap at the top of the slide. They were both laughing by the time they made it back to the ground. The dad, James, looked over at the park bench longingly. A few years ago, his wife used to sit there and watch her husband and son play for hours. Today however, instead of his wife, a little black book was on the bench.
