My Top 10 Audiodrama Podcasts
You know how people always say the book is better than the movie? I would argue that the audio drama is even better than the book—movies for your ears as producers of The Truth would put it. I love audio dramas—especially science fiction. Whether I'm doing dishes, driving to work, or trying to fall asleep I'm usually listening to a podcast. With all the day to day stress audio dramas are my favourite escape from reality so here is a look at my top 10 audio drama podcasts. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do regardless of where you listen—Spotify, Stitcher, iHeartRadio, Apple Podcasts...

Ontario Backyard Bird ID 101-1
Who is visiting your back yard? Find out with this list, broken down into five parts with five birds per article. Whether you have a bird feeder or not you have likely asked yourself, “What bird is that?” Maybe this list will be helpful! Visiting species will be dependent on the types of bird feeders (platform, tube, suet) you use, range of the species, time of year, and available habitat nearby. This series of articles includes abundant backyard birds that frequently use feeders in Ontario, listed alphabetically. I listed only the most common calls and some of the key id features. The similar species only apply to other birds within Ontario as many birds have look-alikes in different regions.

Western Chorus Frog Citizen Science Research
Western chorus frog populations of the Great Lakes/St.Lawrence/Canadian Shield are currently listed as a threatened species by COSEWIC however not much is known about the full range of the frogs. Blazing Star Environmental (BSE) is looking to learn more about this species through a three-year citizen science program in Southern Ontario. While it started last year in 2020, BSE is still looking for volunteers this season and next season. On February 6/2021, two members of BSE hosted an information webinar about the Western Chorus Frog Long-Term Monitoring Program, this article is an account of the webinar that took place.

Bird Feeder Related Diseases
Dr. Brian Stevens is a wildlife pathologist for the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative (CWHC). Most of his time is spent performing necropsy’s on birds, mammals, and the occasional reptile or amphibian. He is always looking to answer the question, “Why did this animal die?” On February 4th he took time away from the scalpel to let people across Canada know about some diseases that might be affecting birds at your feeder.

Come along with me...
Adventure Time is a cartoon featuring Finn the human and Jake the dog. Created by Pendleton Ward, the series started as a cartoon short that went viral. It is set in the Land of Ooo, a post-apocalyptic earth populated by monsters, princesses, and candy people. Finn and Jake set off on many adventures, but it isn’t all fun and games--usually, there are villains, dungeon crawls and important life lessons to be learned too. With ten seasons and 283 episodes, the series features many quirky characters, lore that deepens with every episode, and the occasional fart joke.

Make Your Lawn Work for You
Everyone that owns a home likely has a lawn that requires regular care and maintenance but doesn’t give anything back to those that care for it—whether it is only a few square meters or a few acres. What if instead of caring for a lawn you could take care of your very own food forest that provided fresh food to your family and community? Grass lawns require continual mowing, turn yellow in droughts, and offer no productive yields in return for that time and energy you spent. Food forests, while they do require care and maintenance, also provide fresh produce, sequester more carbon than lawns, improve soil quality over time, foster positive relationships between people and the environment while creating habitat and food for vital pollinator species.

The Legend of Death
Thanas sat at his workstation in the animal cloning lab, a sympathetic frown creasing his face as he tried not to look at the ghost that hovered over his coworker’s shoulder. Patrick’s mother had passed away a few months ago. Thanas could see the weight of her dragging him down. Dark circles under his eyes, hands shaking, Thanas had already put in a complaint but his boss had simply shrugged his shoulders. They needed every available scientist they could get. Avoiding eye contact, Thanas carefully put in his ear plugs, blocking out the incessant mumblings of the spirit in order to better focus on his work.
