Meeting My Clone
I sat in the waiting room wringing my hands together, nervous excitement gnawing at my stomach. I hadnāt been able to eat anything all morning. This moment had played out in my mind thousands of times. I had written about it, drawn about it, worked over-time for some highly suspicious characters to save up enough money. All of my savings had gone into this moment. Soon, I would meet my clone to find out if it was all worthwhile.

Songs I Play on Repeat
It is that song you just canāt get out of your head. You hear it once, maybe twice, and the next thing you know you are humming it while you do your dishes. You start singing it in the showerādisjointed lines because you havenāt memorized it yet. Sometimes just one line repeats itself over and over and over until you simply canāt stand it. You HAVE to listen to that song again. If you were smart, you immediately searched for the song when you first heard it and added it to your Spotify playlist (or wherever you get your music). If you didnāt have the foresight, you either desperately typed those disjointed lines into Google or turned back to that radio station just hoping it will come on the radio again.

Peter, Take Care of My Girlfriend
Sorry sweetheart, going to be late. Peter will take care of you. April blinked back angry tears at the sight of the text message on her phone. Take care of me? She wondered, what does that even mean? Chewing the inside of her cheek she put the finishing touches on her makeup and stepped out of the bathroom. Peter had been leaning against the kitchen counter, distracting himself with his phone until she was ready.

Pizza Doesn't Count
āAre you sure you donāt mind?ā Alex was asking Dominic, knowing he had never been a fan of crowds. They stood outside one of the busiest restaurants in the city. It was hot enough outside that Dominic was finding his plain button-down shirt a little too warm. He undid the top couple of buttons as he answered her.

Talking to Moths
Diana dabbed at her hair, making one last futile attempt to flatten the rogue strands on top of her head. A small gray moth had been fluttering around her bathroom, finally landing on the mirror within reach. Diana grabbed a glass sitting on the counter and patiently waited for the fuzzy insect to climb up the side so she could safely cup her hand over it and lead the moth to freedom, opening the bathroom window with her other hand.

8 Years Later
āAnd that is how I met my uncles,ā the girl with flaming hair finished reading her story with a flourish. Her three uncles looked at her in stunned silence. Eight years had passed since that day and ever since the reptilianās lives had been closely intertwined with the young ladies. They had certainly intended on finding her a proper home, at least at first. Somewhere with humans, maybe even a mother and father with other kids. But she had inexplicably saved all of them. Kriel still insisted that it was simply a life debt they owed her but even he could not deny that a life without her had become unimaginable. Even when they considered her strange power the brothers felt bonded to the girl in ways they had never thought possible.

Dust and Jewels
Strand dashed down the street, careened around a corner, and slipped into a dark alley. His air sacks swelled, tongue scenting the air as he waited in the darkness. Footsteps rushed by. He waited for a few heartbeats longer then, satisfied he had evaded pursuit, he pulled his hood off his tricolored head and hefted the sack in his hand. Striding down the alley he suddenly tripped, his bundle spilling and sending jewels tumbling into the dust. Strand cursed to himself, quick to collect his stolen goods. He glanced over his shoulder to take a closer look at what he had tripped on. His orange eyes widened in surpriseāit was a girlāa human girl curled up in a ragged cloak. Her eyes glittered at him fiercely. They matched the color of the skyāpale and beautiful. Strand lowered his snout in a sympathetic gesture, āWhere are your parents?ā

My First Kiss with Laine
Iām here. I sent the text to the group chat, my palms moist and hands shaking. I had arrived ten minutes early. It was something of a superpower of mine, even when running late I still somehow managed to arrive at least ten minutes early. It always made first meets and interviews nerve-wracking, spending those ten minutes impatiently waiting. I chewed at my lower lip, waiting for those three little dots to appear on the corner of my screen.

The Wilds
To read chapter 1 click here! With Layla and himself piled into the truck, Jasper drove them to the kill site. His half-eaten sandwich and fries were sitting on the center console of the truck, the mug of coffee jammed into a cupholder and surrounded by old coffee stains. He offered her some before grabbing a french fry, āIt isnāt wolves. Maybe a grizzly bearā¦ā

Organize Your Way to ProductivityTop Story - March 2021
Iām an artist and creative writerāIām also a student supporting myself financially. I knew getting through school without a job wasnāt an option for me. Getting through six exams in a week is stressful enough without worrying about the finances. An outlet for all that exam stress is being creative by painting or writing but it can be hard to make the time. All that stress can really inhibit my creative flow.

I first joined Vocal after seeing an ad on Facebook for the Night Owl challenge which ended on January 19/2021. At that moment I was feeling down on myself because I had completely misread a deadline for a short story competition but then this little ad showed up. The deadline was midnight that night and the only story requirements were to include a barn owl. With the clock ticking I reviewed my short story, made some quick corrections, and came out with an incredible vision in my mind.
