Regina King
If I could only choose one word to describe Regina King, I would say POWERFUL. On-screen certainly. The Leftovers (2014-2017 on HBO) is my number one favourite tv show and in it, Regina King exudes strength. Not only through her physical appearance but in her words, emotions, and actions. The same goes for her role in Seven Seconds (2018 on Netflix). Then, when I found out she was going to be the star actress in Watchmen (2019 on HBO) the tv show I could not wait to see her again.

Artsy Fartsy
Editing starts long before a photo is ever taken. Every day, we are making thousands of edits to our lives. Choosing the turkey sandwich on brown bread instead of white, picking the darkly coloured orange instead of the lighter one with a green tinge. Choosing to wear your favourite t-shirt instead of the new sweater your grandmother gave you, the one with the too-cute fluffy white cats.

Anthro Universe
The bar didn’t have much to offer other than hot broth and eye-watering moonshine. It didn’t help that the alligator bartender referred to both as swamp water. Fifty-fifty chance you would actually get what you were looking for. Rob, an old tiger, took a cautious sniff of his cup. Not liking the odour he switched cups with his human friend, Sheila. Sheila took a swig, her face expressionless as she focused on writing in her little black notebook.

The Wilds
In the Rocky Mountains of Canada, roads can get treacherous in winter. Black ice, avalanches, and snowstorms weren’t unfamiliar to the rangers working in the area. Not to mention wildlife—bears, cougars, wolves and other animals could pose a threat. Especially during those long and cold winters where hunger drove animals into desperation. Admittedly, in recent years snow storms proved to be the biggest danger as they became increasingly unpredictable.

Still Single
Plenty of Fish, OkCupid, Hinge, Bumble, Tinder. I’ve been on all the dating apps, including 3Fun and others for LGBTQIA+ and untraditional relationship structures. Despite the dating and experimentation, I’m still single after hitting the big 30 last summer.

Time Slips On
Annie fidgeted in her hoverchair. The backrest molded to her spine for maximum comfort but that nagging phantom discomfort from her useless legs never really went away. She wondered what was taking her assistant so long to return with the tea she had requested. She blinked, looking down and to the right to check the time. The small glowing numbers floated there in her vision—her wrinkled brow furrowed in confusion at the numbers. Time seemed to be slipping for her lately, more so than usual. Minutes stretched out, feeling impossibly long. Drumming her fingers on the polished surface of her desk she called out to her assistant, “Dash! Fetch me my little black book.”

The ARK
Raven sat in front of her computer like she did most nights, the glow of the screen as pale as her skin. She tapped a few keys, like a bird pecking its prey but the results never satisfied her. The young woman sat back with a groan, “Taffy, what are we going to do?”

Writers Block Prevention: Prompts, Soundtracks & Pure Creativity
Maybe you are burnt out and just need a break, or it’s been so long that you feel like you have forgotten how to write. You’ve been sitting, staring at a blank page for an hour and nothing has happened. You might even have the idea right there at the edge of your mind, maybe it’s clear enough it plays like a movie in your head but the words just refuse to flow onto the page.

Black Classical Music
I’m not a musician—I can’t even carry a tune. Even whistling is a struggle for me. When I’m looking for music to listen to, I want something relaxing that will soothe my anxiety, improve my creative flow or my mood, and either help me focus or sleep. Many of Nina Simone’s songs fit quite nicely into those categories, covering a number of genres including classical, jazz, and folk.

Storytelling with a BEAT
“This is not the news. No way is this the news…” But this is Snap Judgement, and this storytelling podcast has gotten me through some tough times. Five years ago, I was going through a quarter-life crisis. I had returned home to live with my mom after an eight-month trip to New Zealand that had ended in extreme homesickness. I was feeling aimless, picking up temporary jobs wherever I could, my hopes and dreams coming out of art college having gone nowhere. The circle of friends I had made before traveling had largely moved on or moved away and my boyfriend at the time was realizing I didn’t fit into his future plans of having 2.5 kids. Snap Judgement was there to remind me that I wasn’t the only one in the world struggling to find my way, struggling to find a place to fit in and belong. Despite all the heartbreak, loneliness, and boredom I had Glynn Washington and the Snap Judgement stories to keep me company.

Fibrous Entangler
Matthew tried not to let his teeth chatter as he pulled out the little black ledger book again. His numb fingers slid the elastic band aside, slipping it open to the page bookmarked by a frayed ribbon. It was still there—the cheque that would change everything. Breath fogging before him, Matthew tried to imagine what he would do with $20,000.
