You know how people always say the book is better than the movie? I would argue that the audio drama is even better than the book—movies for your ears as producers of The Truth would put it. I love audio dramas—especially science fiction. Whether I'm doing dishes, driving to work, or trying to fall asleep I'm usually listening to a podcast. With all the day to day stress audio dramas are my favourite escape from reality so here is a look at my top 10 audio drama podcasts. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do regardless of where you listen—Spotify, Stitcher, iHeartRadio, Apple Podcasts...

Don’t forget to subscribe, rate, and review the podcasts you love!

10. Motherhacker (Crime Comedy)

This is probably the most light-hearted out of my top ten picks—though Beyond Belief is the funniest Motherhacker is still an entertaining ride. Bridget, with her ex-husband in rehab and bank account empty, starts vishing over the phone. How far will the lies go?

9. The Truth (Drama)

“New stories in stereo.” The Truth offers a variety of fictional stories from a variety of writers. Some are dark, others are funny, all of them are rather enjoyable and occasionally have me questioning my reality. The episodes are short and not serialized so it’s a great podcast if you want the quick satisfaction that comes from a short story.

8. The Edge of Sleep (Thriller)

How long have you been able to go without sleep? A day? Two? After finishing a night shift one man discovers everyone in the world that has fallen asleep has died. Banding together with a group of survivors they struggle to find the truth before they also fall asleep.

7. The Second Oil Age (Science Fiction)

In a post-energy-crisis world learn how humanity’s thirst for oil is satiated by a sentient deep-sea species. From the tech, to the characters to the setting it satisfies my intense need for amazing science fiction.

6. The Thrilling Adventure Hour (Beyond Belief) (Supernatural Comedy)

Acker and Blacker have created a few different series but my absolute favourite from The Thrilling Adventure Hour is the Beyond Belief episodes. Frank and Sadie Doyle are two star crossed lovers and alcoholics filled with quips and, oh yes, they see ghosts. It’s always a laugh and you may even recognize the voices from a favourite cartoon of mine.

5. Steal the Stars (Science Fiction)

Two government employees guard a big secret—a crashed UFO and an alien body. After much fraternization they come up with a plan to pull off an impossible heist—will they succeed? Listen to find out.

4. Derelict (Science Fiction)

Why am I recommending a podcast with only one episode? Because it seriously is that good—I am so excited for the spin-off series and wish the producers all the best in getting back to the original series. The delays have been long but I think it will be worth it!

3. The White Vault (Adventure Horror)

Maybe keep the lights on for this one! Season one chronicles the records of a repair team that was sent to a remote Svalbard outpost. Every season features a range of languages and voices from around the world. Isolation horror and arctic survival meets fascinating modern archaeology. I’m always refreshing my feed to check for new episodes of The White Vault.

2. DUST (Science Fiction)

I am in love with all three seasons of DUST, having listened to each episode at least twice. Truly a masterpiece for the ears regardless of what season you start with.

Season 1, HORIZONS features an anthology of audio stories including Ray Bradbury and Philip K. Dick.

Season 2, FLIGHT 008 follows the passengers of a flight from Tokyo to San Francisco that jumps through spacetime landing in the year 2040.

Season 3, CHRYSALIS tells a story of vengeance from the perspective of an AI awakening after the genocide of the human race and a diplomat desperate to stop the cycle of violence.

1. SAYER (Science Fiction)

I recently discovered this podcast and have been falling asleep to it every night for the last couple weeks. Something about that soothing voice—even if SAYER is trying to convince you there are no bees on Typhon. I’m up to episode 58 and have been loving the slow build of AI advancement.
