Come along with me...
And remember what it's like being a kid.
Adventure Time is a cartoon featuring Finn the human and Jake the dog. Created by Pendleton Ward, the series started as a cartoon short that went viral. It is set in the Land of Ooo, a post-apocalyptic earth populated by monsters, princesses, and candy people. Finn and Jake set off on many adventures, but it isn’t all fun and games--usually, there are villains, dungeon crawls and important life lessons to be learned too. With ten seasons and 283 episodes, the series features many quirky characters, lore that deepens with every episode, and the occasional fart joke.
Even though the last official episode aired in 2018, Adventure Time has been a cartoon I’ve found myself returning to over and over again ever since it first started on Cartoon Network in 2010. It’s my guilty pleasure binge. I’m thirty years old and fully admitting I love a cartoon about a twelve year old boy and his yellow stretching dog. The series itself is too much to get into but I do want to share a few of my favourite characters. I hope you’ll love them as much as I do.
Peppermint Butler
The Dark One, also known as Pep-But, is my favourite of all the candy people. Loyal butler to Princess Bubblegum he makes an excellent chamomile tea but has a dark and secret past hinted at throughout the series. He’s even a friend of Death.
“Stare into where the two walls meet. Now slowly, cross your eyes. Do it, fools!”
- Peppermint Butler, Season 2, Death in Bloom
BMO
BMO is not your average video game. S/he has a colourful imagination and often gets up to many hilarious antics from tricking Ice King into piloting an imaginary submarine to showing, Football, an imaginary friend how to be a real boy. Despite not having a gender BMO is often referred to as male though the little robot cutie does display feminine characteristics.
“BMO Chop! If this were a real attack, you'd be dead.”
- BMO, Season 4, Card Wars
Jake the Dog
Jake is Finn’s best friend and adoptive brother. Despite being thought of as older Jake can best be described as easily distracted and irresponsible with a deep love for food.
“Makin’ pancakes, makin’ bacon pancakes. Take some bacon and I’ll put it in a pancake. Bacon pancakes, that’s what it’s going to make. Bacon pancaaaake!”
- Jake the Dog, Season 4, Burning Low
Magic Man
The most irredeemable of all Adventure Time characters. Originally from Mars, he was banished to Earth long before the series for a long list of crimes. Completely apathetic he refuses to take responsibility and, despite the many urgings from Grob Gob Glob Grod, Magic Man continues wreaking magical chaos on citizens of Ooo.
“I win again, just like always!”
- Magic Man, Season 4, Sons of Mars
Root Beer Guy
While not appearing in very many episodes this character has held a special place in my heart ever since I saw him hunched over a typewriter. In Season five’s episode that shares his name, we get a special look into the life of a candy couple. He is a telemarketer by day and a struggling writer by night with a wife, Cherry Cream Soda, that worries for him.
“Bingo, bango.”
- Root Beer Guy, Season 5, Root Beer Guy
The most recent special, Adventure Time: Distant Lands, was released in 2020 on HBO Max and continues to be a cartoon the whole family can get in on. It’s hard to believe it’s been over a decade and I still recommend this show to everyone I know—except maybe my future bosses.
