My First Job Could Have Been My Last
I was a teenaged telemarketer. It was my first actual job. In my senior year of high school, I got an after-school job in downtown Pittsburgh. I’d looked through the Sunday paper and found an ad for phone sales. Went to the address, filled out the paperwork, and was hired. Pay would be a weekly check.

Sidonglobophobia and Misophonia
There's a certain type of snow that is flakey, wet snow in the above freezing air, and compacts under the feet when walked upon, giving off a squeaky 'ginchy' sound as it compresses under the walker's weight. In Sweden, they call this 'knarra', which translates into 'creak' I call it ginchy and have used that word for as long as I can remember.

How NOT to Travel in Chicago
When I was in bookselling the month of May meant BEA- that's the Book Expo America. Pre-COVID is was held exclusively in New York City, but there was a time it floated between NYC, LA, and Chicago. The year after I moved to Michigan it was in Chicago and I was excited to attend.

We Move in the Direction That We Face
When I was 15 my boyfriend told me I was beautiful. I believed him. When I looked into the mirror I saw a pretty girl looking back at me. When I was 16 my parents told me I was fat. I believed them. When I looked into the mirror I saw a fat girl. The pretty girl was gone. I must have eaten her.

Bedroom Problems
We have bedroom problems just like any other couple. Someone wants it but the other person isn't willing (or able) to give. That leaves the other person out in the cold, forcing them to do without or manage things on their own. Sometimes I'm the problem. Sometimes it's my husband.
