Never Settle
"Never settle." My mother told me this so many times growing up, but I never realized how impactful those words were until now. Those two words were and are the most important lesson my mother ever taught me. From when I was little through my adulthood, never settling has gotten me to where I am today, thanks to my mom.

Arrival
We had been told stories of the great ships carrying the strange, white men. Travelers from other tribes had brought the white man’s items to trade; things we had never seen. They tell us stories of their encounters with them, and their golden hair and blue eyes. Our elders warned us that they could be dangerous, others believed they could be friends. I couldn’t help but wonder about these men. Who are they? Where did they come from? Why is their hair the color of the wheat we harvest? What do they want? These questions ran through my mind like rapids, as I watched the distant ship on the horizon grow closer to the shore.

When You Meet the One
It was the first warm spring day in Philadelphia, 1953. Fairmont Park was hosting its weekly Sunday open-air market, which was full of vendors selling all sorts of food, clothing, and household goods. Freddie, a blond-haired, blue-eyed, all-American fellow, was out exploring the market with his buddies. With a vanilla ice cream in one hand and a hot dog in the other, he made his way through the market with no particular destination in mind.

Blind Date
It was a brisk fall evening in New York City. Mave wrapped her arms around herself and rubbed her shoulders to stay warm. She hadn’t brought a jacket, wanting to show off her figure in the emerald dress she was wearing. It was a blind date after all, the first since her divorce. Her friend Dianne had set it up, and she figured it couldn’t hurt to get back out there. But she was so cold, and the restaurant was still about four blocks away. She was considering calling an Über when a voice startled her, “Mave?” She spun around to see a luxurious sports car pulling up behind her.

You Thought You Knew What Was Healthy
"Diet" The word that everyone knows and has most-likely had experience with. You probably instantly think of veggies, intense exercise, and skipping on dessert when you hear it. I used to think that dieting meant cutting out ALL tasty foods and eating way less than I normally did. Luckily, through research, speaking with professionals in the health field, and personal experience, I learned that this is NOT the case. Here are my healthy lifestyle tips that helped me lose 15 pounds over quarantine.

Dogwood Drive
Kappa...Alpha...Theta...The giant Greek letters were the forefront of the mansion's stone exterior. Jez stood below them with hopeful eyes. She had been through the wringer the past two weeks of sorority recruitment, an endless blur of early mornings, chanting, spunky girls jumping around, and lots and lots of girl flirting. Jez couldn't remember a time when her cheeks had been so sore from smiling. Her voice was almost gone, she was coming down with a cold, and her feet were killing her from standing for hours, but it had all been worth it. She had made it to the final stage of recruitment, initiation. KAT wanted her, they gave her a bid, all she had to do was play along with whatever their secret ceremony was and she'd be in. This is the start of my college experience, she thought, This is going to be my legacy.

The Choice He Made
It was a frigid winter morning in Northern Pennsylvania. The sun had not yet risen as Sully started his 2003 Chevy. He had just completed a 10 hour night shift at the mill, and the snow was coming down hard. A snowstorm was nothing new in PA, but boy was he tired. The worries of paying the bills, putting food on the tabe, and getting that damn furnace fixed were weighing heavily on his mind, and he hadn’t gotten any sleep the day before. Sully thought back to the good old days as he headed down the road, when he was a kid. The warm summer sun beating down, swimming in the quarry with his brother. Not a care in the world. Those were the days. Now here he was, a 30 year-old man living paycheck to paycheck. A wife at home who’d been out of work for months due to a bad leg break she suffered chasing the dog down the street. “Damn dog. More trouble than he’s worth,” he thought.
