How Old Skills Can Become New Again
This article was previously published by Dr. James Goydos' website. In September 1985 I was a second-year medical student on vacation with three other students in a small beach community on Mexico’s western coast. One of the students had relatives living in Mexico and we were able to borrow a car and drive down to the local beach town. We expected to stay from the 15th to the 21st but on September 19, 1985 at 7:17 AM Mexico City was hit with an 8.0 magnitude earthquake.

Public Servants Throughout History – What’s Their Motivation?
This article was previously published on Dr. James Goydos' website May 2021. I consider a public servant to be someone who works for the public good, either as part of the government or on their own. I do not include elected officials above the municipal level in this definition as few State and National politicians run for office because they are altruistic. Altruism is the hallmark of a true public servant, though it doesn’t have to be the main reason a person makes this choice.

Are You Anxious About the Vaccine or the White Coat?
White coat hypertension, or white coat syndrome is something many are all too familiar with. On average, the prevalence of white coat hypertension (WCH) is around 10-15% of the general population. For those that may not be familiar, WCH is a condition whereby patients experience elevated blood pressure when they are in the presence of a doctor or other medical professional.

How the Skills You Nurture Can Make You a Better Human
What is considered a skill? Is it something you’re born with, something you nurture? I, Dr. James Goydos, am a senior surgical oncologist, a former tenured professor of surgery and tumor biology, I have three patents, and I ran an NIH-funded research laboratory for 15 years. One could say I do have some skills. However, I don’t consider any of these accomplishments particularly noteworthy, as I enjoyed all of these activities and have a knack for this type of work.

How a Trauma Death Can Turn Doctors into Better Surgeons
This article was previously authored by Dr. James Goydos and published on Medika Life May 2021. On a Friday night in the Fall of 1992, I was the fifth-year Chief Surgical Resident on call at a level-one trauma center in central Connecticut. This meant that, other than the in-house cardiac surgical attending, I was the head surgeon in the hospital at the time. At approximately 11:00 PM that evening we received a trauma alert with the victim arriving in the ER within the next 10 minutes.

What Ever Happened to the Concept of the Absent-Minded Professor?
This article was previously published by Dr. James Goydos in BeingWell in April 2021. The phrase “absent-minded professor” is commonly used to describe academics who are so engrossed in their work that they neglect to keep track of what is going on in the world around them. The stereotype that professors can get so obsessed with their research that they pay little attention to anything else is not considered an insult in academic circles but is seen as a badge of honor.

Missing a Melanoma Diagnosis Is a Crime.
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, and the numbers are on the rise. In 2018, there were 9.5 million deaths due to cancer. This is expected to almost double by 2040. There are a number of variables which may influence this trend, from an increase in the average lifespan, to lifestyle and environmental factors, and more. Changes in cancer screening behaviors is also important to consider, as many potential cancers have gone unchecked during the coronavirus pandemic.

Insights From an Ice Storm 25 Years Ago & Random Acts of Kindness
From July 1993 through June 1995, I was living in Pittsburgh doing a surgical oncology fellowship while my wife was living in Philadelphia in a maternal and fetal medicine fellowship. This meant living apart for the first three years of marriage and so I took many long trips down the Pennsylvania Turnpike from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia to spend time with my wife.

To the Man With a Workshop, The Whole World Needs Furniture
This article was previously published on Dr. James Goydos' website. About five years ago I ran into a problem; I had lots of woodworking projects I wanted to do but I didn’t have any place to put them once they were completed. I had just about filled our house with the amount of furniture my wife was willing to tolerate and my three adult children aren’t married yet so I still have to wait until I can attempt to furnish their homes with my creations. My solution was to become something I call a vigilante woodworker. Whenever I enter someone’s home, office, or backyard I begin to map out where one of my wooden creations would fit right in and planned my projects accordingly.

Woodworking Takes Planks of Wood & Makes Them Beautiful
This article was previously published by Dr. James Goydos in WotWU February 2021. I have had many hobbies in my life. I collected coins when I was a teenager, I ran marathons in college, when I have the time I ski or ride my road bike, and I’ve always been an avid reader. However, the hobby that I have practiced the longest, and that gives me the most pleasure, is furniture building.
