The Tree of Echoes
I don’t know how long I’ve been lost in this place. Time moves differently here, at a much slower pace. And while I remain a child in body, my mind and heart have continued to grow. I’ve also forgotten what my name used to be. I think it might have started with an A, or maybe a V.

The ExceptionTop Story - March 2024
Adelaide took a sip of her caramel flavored coffee before she let out a sigh and placed the cup back onto the table. She looked across the chestnut colored table at Lisa who was watching her with curiosity. This was their ritual. Every Monday evening they came to this same corner diner and talked about Adelaide’s life. Most nights the conversation centered around the trials and tribulations of Adelaide’s all-too-often chaotic love life, but tonight was different.

In the end, all that matters...
Eleven years ago I finished my first novel. The person who completed that life-long dream was filled with enthusiasm, eagerness, and hope for the future of their writing career. Today, the faint specter of that youthful exuberance can hardly be seen when someone looks at me. If they stare long enough, a slight shimmer might alert them to its presence, but unless they look closely, they are unlikely to see it.

Scarlet Dreams
Chapter 2: The moonlight of the previous night had not done justice to both the majesty and the ruin of the library. It’s incredible how eight years of neglect can leave a once beautiful and sturdy building so completely destroyed. Scarlet Dreams
Prologue: No one knows where they came from, but I suspect that they were here all along, hiding in plain sight. All anyone really knows is that one day the world was operating as it always had, and then the next day cities on every continent were in flames. Military efforts to stop the wave of destruction were met with swift defeat. Even the might of the American, Russian, and Chinese militaries were no match for them. In the matter of hours nearly every country fell into anarchy as blood flowed in the streets.

Heat of the Moment
This isn’t how it’s supposed to end. I have so many things I still want to do. I can’t deserve such an unceremonious ending, and yet here I am, clutching my abdomen. The pain is blinding and the blood seeping through my fingers is hot and sticky. I swallow hard, looking over to the right. Laura is kneeling on the floor and staring at me with wide terrified eyes. Her gaze shifts from my face down to my stomach. I guess I’m glad it was me the bank robbers shot and not her. Maybe I can take solace in knowing that my last act in life was taking a bullet for a friend.
