Starting Out She’s known to the world as Lady Gaga, but underneath all that comes with the name there’s a person inside who’s faced struggles and had to fight to get to where she is now. Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta in Manhattan, New York City, her family were upper-middle class and there was never a need to worry about money, though it would be wrong to assume there were few tribulations in regard to her upbringing. Her parents, both Italian-American, came from lower class families and had managed to work their way to success, so there was a deep-rooted appreciation within the family for what they had.

Motivational Monday - Billie Eilish
Starting out With a name like Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell she was destined for fame but no one could ever imagine she would blow up quite the way she did. Born on December 18th 2001 in California to Maggie Baird and Patrick O’Connell, her mother was predominantly an actress and her father a musician. Though they weren’t financially wealthy having been greatly affected by the recession, their family life was rich in adventure. Growing up Eilish and her brother Finneas were home schooled as their parents wanted them to be able to concentrate on their passions and innate talents while gaining an education.

Motivational Monday - Mark Zuckerberg
Starting out Mark Zuckerberg was born on 14th May 1984 just outside of Manhattan in New York City. He was the only son of his parents Edward and Karen and growing up with three sisters he was deemed ‘the prince’ of the family. His home life was comfortable, they were all well-educated with his father a dentist and his mother a psychiatrist and later a stay-at-home mother.

Motivational Monday — Marsha P. Johnson
Growing Up and Moving On Born Malcolm Michaels Jr. on August 24th 1945 to an African American family in New Jersey, Johnson had six siblings growing up and attended an African Methodist Episcopal Church during their childhood. Given their upbringing, Johnson always struggled with their identity as for most of their life they felt they couldn’t be themselves. Johnson first started wearing dresses at the age of five, but it was quickly put a stop to by both their parents and the boys down the road that would bully them for doing so. Their mother once referred to being gay as being “lower than a dog”, prior to knowing and understanding the LGBTQ+ community.
