My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

I wake feeling groggy, my head pounding and my mouth dry. I didn't sleep well last night. Today is a heartbreaking anniversary. On this day, five years ago, I held my father's hand as he slipped quietly from this world. A day that shattered my fragile heart.

A Senryu Poem Senryū (川柳) is a Japanese form of short poetry similar to haiku in construction: three lines with 17 morae (often translated as syllables, 5-7-5). Senryū tend to be about human foibles while haiku tend to be about nature, and senryū are often cynical or darkly humorous while haiku are more serious. (Wikipedia)
